Walky robot understands iPhone gestures, football fanaticism (video)

Hey there sailor, we imagine you've been doing your fair share of button mashing what with a certain new bit of software out and about, but how would you like a whole new control paradigm? Taking up Steve Jobs' war on buttons, a group of grad students at Japan's Keio University have put together a comprehensive robot control interface that relies solely on finger swipes, taps, and presses. By employing the iPhone's built-in accelerometer and multitouch screen, the robot can replicate a humanistic walking motion, perform sidesteps and, when called upon, kick a football with gusto and presumed passion. UI gently tweaked in Android 1.5

If you didn't like the way Android 1.0 looked, odds are you're not going to find 1.5 much more to your taste, but some ultra-minor refinements to the latest version's UI elements help add some extra spit and polish that's been missing since the initial launch. The official Android Developers Blog has published a heads-up to devs out there over concerns that the tweaks could break UIs in existing applications; specifically, the minimum width of some elements has been slashed by 20 pixels, so certain layouts could end up looking all wonky. That said, we're digging the revamped contact creation screen (pictured on the right, versus the old style on the left) -- so even if the changes are glacial, at least they're glacial moves in the right direction.

G-Tech kicks out Bluetooth-enabled iPod backpack

Similar to another company we're familiar with, G-Tech has hit it big by slapping iPod-compatibility onto an otherwise drab offering, and now the company has upped the ante by tossing in Bluetooth. Unveiled at CES, the self-proclaimed Next-Generation Messenger Bags with Bluetooth feature the same Eleksen ElekTex smart fabric controls right on the strap, but these controls now control the track / volume functions of your dock-connecting iPod as well as the volume / mute of your phone. The Bluetooth functionality simply allows users to easily mute their iPod to take an incoming call, and the built-in speaker can also pump out the jams (rather meekly, we assume) with any audio device that connects via a 3.5-millimeter cable. There's no word on price or availability, but if you're really dead set on owning an iPod-controlling pack, might we suggest one that doesn't look like an early '90s experiment gone awry?
