Japan, China talking about tie-up for 3G and LTE networks {Engadget Mobile}

May 4th 2009 10:55AM The LTE Technoloogy of Japan is the same of any other LTE. In fact since LTE is still a "3G standard" (as defined by ITU on the IMT-2000) the term 3.9G is much more accurate than 4G. To be a "4G standard" the technology must serve 1Gbps in nomadic environments (as defined by ITU on the IMT-Advanced). Only LTE-Advanced and Wimax-m are candidates technologies to apply to IMT-Advanced and hence apply for a "4G" name.

Details on AT&T's 3G MicroCell: everything but the date and price {Engadget Mobile}

Jan 26th 2009 8:40AM That's because the GSM cells uses different small ranges of frequencies (called carriers) to differentiate one cell site from another, so when the operators installs a new cell they has to reconfigure all the surrounding cell sites in order to have different frequencies, otherwise they will cause interference to each other. in 3G (WCDMA) the sites can all use the same frequency (a big carrier of 5 Mhz) but each cell site has a distinctive code that identifies them, so when they put another cell they has to make sure that the codes are different and that is much more easy to do than changing the frequencies. A new 3G cell can cause some small interference to other sites even with different codes, but the people will use this microcell on indoor environments, where the main coverage is very poor and hence ther will be no interference at all.

AT&T slowing EDGE to force customers to switch to 3G? {Engadget Mobile}

Jan 7th 2009 1:33PM @Scott

I think you have a slight misunderstanding. in GSM/UMTS The UL/DL are indeed separated frecuencies, but the frecuencies are close to each other. "850" realy uses a frequency in the following range: UL (824Mhz - 849Mhz) & DL (869Mhz - 894Mhz), this mode is commonly called 850 band (because the "850" frecuency it's in the middle).

So the 850 an 1900 bands actually are two separated ranges of frequencies and one terminal can only be connected to either one of those.

If the terminals are being attached to EDGE@1900 instead of EDGE@850 can ocurr a performance loss specialy in the indoor, because of the less penetration of the higher frequency

AT&T slowing EDGE to force customers to switch to 3G? {Engadget Mobile}

Jan 7th 2009 8:44AM This is weird, there is not such thing as "lowering EDGE strenght", Edge signal it's the same as GSM voice, you can give less resources to 2G data and more to voice or modify the parameters to force the handover to 3G. I'm pretty sure you can't "lower" EDGE power, without severely affecting GSM voice service.

LTE gets ratified {Engadget Mobile}

Dec 22nd 2008 12:11PM Ja ja ja, so you are impressed with the LTE logo... Then you must see the LTE-Advanced logo!

Tectoy's Zeebo gaming console to run on 3G network in Brazil {Engadget}

Nov 13th 2008 8:43AM The Brazilian government applies this kind of Tax to imports in order to improve the internal market. Brazil has 2/3 the US population (190 millions) and this is a clever way to expand the internal production and create new jobs. For other electronic companies this model has been very benefitial, for example, almost all the cell phones sold in south américa are made in Brazil.

The 3G connection makes sense, especially if it's for free. The price for an internet connection in South America is way higer than in USA and EU, so add another fee to the console doesn't make any sense. I think this console has some kind of web browser and a game shop.

May 1st 2008 1:57PM I'm a chilean too and for what i've heard from people of another counties is that the chilean wine is very good and also cheaper tan others. I thinks it's a good strategy, gain market recognition with a low price so everyone will get a chance to taste it.
