Nokia's Maemo Ovi Store looking rickety, 'beta' label well-deserved {Engadget}

Jan 14th 2010 11:53AM @Rev

Exactly. The Ovi Store for the N900 isn't in beta yet - it hasn't been officially announced available by Nokia, but a couple users found access to the store and reported it: http://thenokiablog.com/2010/01/11/video-ovi-store-nokia-n900/

Chris, I think this is something that you could correct now. Writing about a solution that's not officially available yet and calling it broken just doesn't sound right.

It's these kind of comments that, frankly, make me LMAO. I'm not trying to say that the American market has no importance, but it is, by no means, the most important market for cell phones (smart or dumb). China, where Nokia holds a truly hefty marketshare btw, is the biggest cell phone market in the world, India is another emerging giant, and Europe is still leaps and bounds ahead of the US in penetration and mindshare. Yes, we do matter in the US, but not nearly as much as some of us seem to like to think.

Palm intros Mobile Hotspot app, guaranteed to make your router jealous {Engadget}

Jan 7th 2010 3:34PM Hey, that's great, Palm users. But what's the big news? For Symbian devices, there's been an app called JoikuSpot, which does the same thing, available for ages.

Nokia 'Mystic' leaked, collides E72 heritage with Centro-esque design {Engadget}

I agree that this is not the prettiest looking phone, but what does this have to do with Apple? When did Apple ever make a business-focused phone with a physical QWERTY?

For Nokia's Eseries devices, which is what this looks like, RIM's the main competitor, not Apple. And not every conversation is about X vs. Apple.

Nokia N900 coming to Vodafone UK in January 2010 {Engadget}

Dec 15th 2009 2:27PM @Yaoooo84

Based on the number of simple Apple-defending and Nokia-hating comments you've posted, you seem to actually be very worried that the Nokia N900 is indeed a big threat to the iPhone.

In my opinion, competition is always only good. Let them come, Android, Maemo, iPhone, BlackBerry, all of them, and may only the best win the consumers' hearts and minds.

TeliaSonera prices LTE service, offers free modem upgrade next year {Engadget Mobile}

Dec 15th 2009 2:23PM "Sweden's TeliaSonera"

While TeliaSonera's international HQ is currently located in Stockholm, it's worth a note that TeliaSonera is the result of a 2002 merger between the Swedish and Finnish telecommunications companies, Telia and Sonera, and that the company is jointly managed by Swedes and Finns and its stocks are traded on both the Stockholm Exchange and Helsinki.

So, "Swedish-Finnish TeliaSonera" is more accurate. ;)

Yes, and the European version with 2100 MHz radio for 3G is already out as an unlocked device.

Nokia N900 coming to Vodafone UK in January 2010 {Engadget}

Dec 15th 2009 11:43AM @Yaoooo84

Wrong, Yaoooo84. Currently, the iPhone has about a 10-15% (depending on who's stats you follow) market share of all smartphones in the world, while Nokia maintains a 35% - 38% market share and RIM has about 20%.

However, my original comment wasn't meant to be taken seriously - it was just in reply to Almo's comment that since there is only one new Maemo device coming out next year, the OS is somehow outdated or "no longer supported". If you go and read Almo's comment, you should be able to understand what I meant quite easily.

Dec 15th 2009 9:26AM @Almo

Almo, that's just dumb, and you should know it. There is nothing about the Maemo OS that suggests it's "outdated" and/or "no longer supported". With that same analogy, you can say that the iPhone OS is outdated and no longer supported, since there's only ever been three devices that use the OS, they all look the same, and there's only one new iPhone OS device coming next year.

Nokia E72 now in stock in the New World -- the US, to be specific {Engadget}

Dec 3rd 2009 2:29PM @mfong

They do not charge anything for the GPS function itself, and Ovi Maps, the onboard maps&navigation app is free too, but for turn-by-turn navigation you usually get a complimentary 90 day license with the phone, and then have to pay about $80 a year for a subscription.
