Palm lays the smack down on Pre theme for Android {Engadget}

Aug 13th 2009 12:22AM @bluemonq

err, search before you post. multi-touch is built into the framework. it's just not "enabled" by default so say in part to the then relationship with apple and their patent claims.

why is everyone so far off topic. thanks grandmajamma

last I heard from the mods at xda, no one at palm contacted them directly with any C&D letters so they said until then, they don't consider the threat legit. there most likely would not have been a problem except for l3wish had an ad supported site and commercial looking graphics.

HTC Hero review {Engadget}

Jul 23rd 2009 11:51PM @Joshua Topolsky (again)

again some things that should be cleared up. You mention that it's essentially the same as 1.5, not really. It uses an entirely different framework. Even the apps are different, like the calendar, it's a totally different app all together. Oh and they are still using/calling it touch flo, at least on a build I've been using (right there in the apps list at the bottom)

It's a much more intuitive and advanced rom, it's just ahead of it's time (hardware wise)

"polished enough to go head-to-head with the iPhone -- that kept its open source heart"

The Hero rom is actually not open source.

Hack: use Google Voice to add visual voicemail to your G1, Dream, or Magic {Engadget Mobile}

Jun 29th 2009 4:31PM yes google voice is great but as for visual voicemail phonefusion voicemail+ is way better. It's way better than Apple's version too

Google voice is great for cheapos that want to make free calls and send/receive text messages.

I use it for the free business line that's automatically forwarded to my cell phone

The googlevoice app as it is right now is a little bit buggy and I would not rely on it entirely at this point. The only bad thing about voicemail+ is that it uses up text messages. I only have 400

WSJ: T-Mobile's myTouch 3G coming this summer {Engadget}

Jun 17th 2009 1:52AM not sure I would call this a successor to the G1. sure it has a lot more memory but still not nearly enough local storage. One thing to note is that it is using a similar but older generation processor. I believe the G1 uses a 65nm version instead of the 90nm version used in the magic. It's underclocked quite a bit on the G1 and since the battery life is slightly better on the magic I would assume they have done the same. There are a couple of good cpu overclocking apps that allow you to run the processor at the full 528MHZ it was designed for instead of 384 or whatever it's set at by default.

also I don't feel the keyboard is ready for prime time. I only use the keyboard on my G1 when I am too lazy to open the keyboard. It's not as good as the iphone's soft keyboard which is not that great either.

so really it looks like this is a ram upgrade in a thinner body

How would you change Apple's Nehalem-based Mac Pro? {Engadget}

May 9th 2009 8:48AM @Patriks7

It doesn't need the Xeons. They should be an option. Never have I come home from work to my home computer and said, wow if only this were as fast as my macpro at work. I don't notice the difference in speed. They could easily have a very nice $1800 machine that would satisfy 90% of the people who buy mac pros. Most people that buy them are video editors and they are wasting their money. I work side by side with another guy editing on a G5. He only notices they difference when it comes time to render. Apple should put a desktop Nahalem in there and slap a Quadro CX to handle the rendering.

Air Force now using super-secure version of Windows XP {Engadget}

May 2nd 2009 10:41AM @patriotsn1

I don't why I would even try to argue with you since you are probably 12 or 13, but someone has to say it. you're an idiot.

The military has no business using a mainstream OS. Maybe I've just grownup on too many 80s movies with Unix mainframes. 85% secure is not secure.

The more proprietary their OS and build, the harder it is for Russian and Chinese hackers to interfere and disrupt things. I've used windows most of my life, not because it's secure, it's cheaper and more convenient.
