Palm Pixi seen running webOS 1.3.1 on video
We've already seen a quick Palm Pixi unboxing and hands-on video, but we're guessing most folks are looking for a bit more than that in the lead-up to launch day. Thankfully, YouTube user stayfly2407 has come through with a video that, for the first time, clearly shows the Pixi running webOS 1.3.1, which may or may not be the version the phone actually ships with -- it was only just recently seeded to developers. The video unfortunately doesn't show any new features associated with this version, however, but it does seem to be speedy enough even in spite of the Pixi's slower processor. Head on past the break to see for yourself.

It doesn't ship with 1.3.1. It requires an update out of the box, or at least mine did.

interestingly, the browser in 1.3.1 appears to be displaying placemarkers for flash objects. Not flash yet, but a nice reminder that it's on the way.

As a long-time Pam fan (Palm V, 650, 755p, and Centro), I have to ask: is WebOS still a relevant platform now that Android has so much support?
Don't get me wrong, I think the Pre and the Pixi are awesome devices; I just can't help thinking that WebOS will be footnote in history, slayed by the Android juggernaut.

No doubt they have an uphill battle, but I think if they continue doing what they're doing, they can continue to carve out a solid niche for themselves. There's a TON of android talk now because of the 'droid release.. but let's see what Palm's response is. I can't help but think there's too great of a braintrust over there to just slip quietly away. Granted, I'm a fan too..
But who doesn't root for the underdog?

I think WebOS is terribly relevant, and can think of no reason why it should be slain by Android. I played with a Droid, and I was not that impressed. Aside from the big beautiful screen, it's just an Android device, and I don't see where Android really excels leaps and bounds above WebOS aside from more app support and a few more features. The apps will come, especially with Ares coming later this year. The OS will make great strides in coming months as well (as it already has in the first 4-5 months). Palm just needs to get devices outside of Sprint, because Sprint has such a negative connotation surrounding it, that it's only hurting Palm. EVERY single person who sees my Pre, from iPhone users to non-iPhone users are terribly impressed, and cannot understand why it isn't selling better.
