HTC Droid Eris peeks its head out once more, shows off 5MP camera
Hey, HTC -- we're onto you. We know you're a little upset that the lower-end Droid Eris isn't getting much attention now that the DROID is all over Verizon's marketing agenda, but it's not like we don't feel your pain. For those interested in spending a full Benjamin less on their next Android handset (on Big Red, anyway), the Droid Eris looks to offer that very solution, and now a few more sneak peeks have shown that a 5 megapixel camera (with a video record mode) is gracing the rear. We're also told that WiFi will be onboard (right, VZW?), and a bundle of joy will also be thrown in after mail-in rebate. Whatever that means.

I'm contemplating returning my Sprint Hero (within 30 days), and get the Eris. Better network and cheaper price.
I'd rather have the Eris (despite the cpu), because the Droid is ugly and I can live without the keyboard.
WiiFTW @ Oct 29th 2009 4:03PM
The Eris may be cheaper upfront, but you'll be losing money on the the monthly bills compared to Sprint.

Man this phone is looking even prettier by the minute, that's a sexy bitch.
I'm a try this one for two weeks just to compare it to the Droid, then make my final decision.

I don't see a 3.5mm jack. I really hope it has one like the sprint version

If you want a droid with no keyboard... Buy a droid and keep it closed.. It roughly the same thickness as an iphone so it probably wont get any thicker anyway.. If they wanted to force you to use the keyboard it would be the only option.. But the droid is as thin as non keyboard phones and has an onscreen as well.. So if you dont like it dont use it

I don't understand why the ERIS will be so much less powerful than the Motorola Droid?
Why wouldn't you release a phone just like the Motorola with the fastest specs without a keyboard? Wouldn't that essentially be the first iphone competitor?
You're not really a competitor if you still have a keyboard....
Anyway, I want a fast (processor and 256ram) android phone with wifi , 3.5mm, and no keyboard, am I the only one?
WiiFTW @ Oct 29th 2009 4:01PM
Supposedly the Droid is thinner than the iPhone 3GS but that's what I've heard, so I don't think many people will care about the size.
evbart @ Oct 29th 2009 4:06PM
The droid is definitely bigger, boxier, and much uglier than the iphone.
People like and buy the iphone because its pretty and has sexy advertising, I don't know why no one has taken them head on by building the same phone with android.
I want the iphone, I have the storm (cause i was a blackberry fan), and since they can't build a touchscreen phone I'll probably get an android. I have no need for a keyboard, thats actually one of the things I like most about the iphone, I can type fine on it.

anyone else notice the weather in the North Pole? (on the screenshot).. i got a little chuckle out of that
Who? @ Oct 29th 2009 5:16PM
Wow, what a waste of space at the bottom of the phone. Just cut it off; you can put the HTC logo somewhere else.
Tanuj @ Oct 29th 2009 5:40PM
is there really that big of a difference between the 528 mHz processor of the droid eris and the 550 mHz processor of the moto droid?
cgibin @ Oct 29th 2009 9:30PM
That's what I'm thinking...I think this device will do just fine with a 528 mHz processor.
Dwayne @ Oct 29th 2009 10:19PM
I would rather get the Eris than the Droid. It is less expensive and looks better. Plus, I don't like the slide out keyboard. I heard that the Hero will be getting the 2.0 Android update. That to me makesvit a better buy.
The Informant @ Oct 29th 2009 11:04PM
It will launch on Nov. 6th along with the Motorola Droid. This is info from the Equipment Guide and it will be $99 after rebate.
mulda71 @ Oct 30th 2009 8:08AM
ok so what about that OTHER HTC phone already?! Anybody find any info other than what they said earlier in the week? I'm gonna have decision paralysis until I know what the scoop is on that one. I'm almost falling for the droid hype, but man, i still think thats an ugly phone... cool but ugly. I like the Eris better--but that screen is too small... hard to go 3.2 when there is 3.7 or 4.3 available.
forcedsquint @ Oct 30th 2009 10:37AM
This article states the Eris will ship with Android 2.0.
