Nokia N97 firmware 2.0 hits the tubes, is ready for your attention
Got an N97? Yeah? Reckoned that Nokia has forgotten about your loyalty and moved all of its focus onto the N900? Fret not, dearest early adopter -- the engineers in Espoo are making good on a promise to clear out lots of bugs in the aforesaid handset with firmware 2.0, and if we're seeing this right, it's available now to download all over the world. We know, you 5800 owners are clamoring for the same type of TLC, but for now it looks like the pricier sibling is getting its due. Hit the read link and get your download going, and make sure to report back on your kinetic scrolling experience, cool?

Not sure if the site is getting overwhelming numbers of visitors for the software upgrade, but the link doesn't load. Is there an alternative?
nickfd @ Oct 27th 2009 10:43AM
The update is available through the nokia software updater, off your pcsuite. The link there only takes you to the dailymobile forums where people were discussing it.

A link to a forum?
Come on engadget...can you at least link to a video or something that shows the new features?
Great article!

Folks - if you're any kind of Nokia user, you'd know to first check for OTA updates on your device; and thereafter, the SW Update, which says: "Why yes - the new firmware is available! Please use your PC to update." Which I did, having been waiting for this for awhile (loads of video's out there, as we all knew this was coming in the Oct/November time frame).
I have not detected any major bumps in performance. In fact, my photos don't process as quickly as they did before. But the scrolling everyone was screaming about is now functional.

Hmmm, in London on 3 Network here, and device and Software Update Tool are still reporting that I have the most recent, older software. Lame.

Well, after having to reinstall my original Ovi Suite I got with my N97, since Ovi Suite 2 is a disaster, my NAM N97 is now updated. Everything looks good so far. Noticed a couple of things:
1) Ovi Store is useless now. Where ever you touch the screen in the application to scroll, it will go into whatever you touched no matter what. Don't know how Nokia screwed that up, but they did. It worked fine before.
2) I noticed they changed the look of the clock, profile, date combo on the homescreen. There was no border around the 3 of them, now there is.
3) Music player has obviously been changed to be more finger friendly. There was nothing wrong with it before, and I'm not happy with this change. It wastes so much space by trying to give you a bigger area to touch with your finger, yet all the font sizes are exactly the same.
4) Nokia Email (Messaging) is nowhere to be found on this, and it's supposed to be here.
5) Dialing pad has been changed to display letters and numbers, but the stupid contacts icon is super tiny for some dumb reason.
6) Nokia Maps has been updated, yet, I'm still being told there's an update for it??
7) Vlingo is a new application.
8) Search application has been updated.
9) Wi-Fi Wizard and Vlingo added to homescreen widget list, however nothing else that was said to be coming (CNBC, ESPN) is there.
10) Screen seems to respond better to touch input.
11) Long presses on the keyboard brings up secondary character finally!
12) Photo's and Video's applications have been changed to be more finger friendly (bigger icons), and scrolling through photo's with the scroll bar brings up a little box telling you the date of the photo's at that location.
Still looking for more.

You can also swipe to answer now. Used to have to unlock and then press. I actually approve of this improvement - I frequently missed calls while trying to unlock and then hit answer, etc.

thats cool for the most part.
now can my 5800 get a little of that love nokia? or can i at least get the last two freakin updates that went to everyone else? my nam 5800 is showing 21.2.025 as current still :((((((((((((
i want a n900 so badly but have decided to wait for a maemo5 device with att 3g. u kno, the 3g that 82 million people are using. so in the meantime i have to make this 5800 last as long as i can. which means i need some updates nokia!!!!!!!!!!!

Never had a problem with that. Nokia messed this up hard. I can't set an image as wallpaper anymore from the photo gallery. Wtf Nokia?
Douglas @ Oct 27th 2009 5:42PM
I take that back about not being able to select Options>Use Image>Set as wallpaper in the photo gallery. It was being extremely gay for the past hour, and now all of a sudden it wants to work. On a side note, the gallery is dreadfully slow loading my photo's compared to the previous firmware.
Douglas @ Oct 27th 2009 6:43PM
I take that back about the setting image as wallpaper from gallery. Turns out it wasn't showing up for an hour for some stupid reason. Now it is.
Robin @ Oct 27th 2009 7:33PM
Yes - photo gallery is now horribly slow. It was fine before. Also, unlike you, I am finding the touch less responsive and precise. Except for the long key press updates, I'm regretting having done this so quickly. I hope Nokia will release an update sometime soon. I thought performance would be better, given the new memory reconfiguration.
youngcalihottie @ Oct 28th 2009 6:36AM
dang douglas thats crazy that ur n97 was having sex with other n97s! well i guess u can look at the bright side, at least it lasted for an hour! no one likes a minute-man ...err... minute-n97
hannibal97 @ Oct 29th 2009 11:06PM
the update is okay i really like the scrolling and the updates to picture and video stability really help. but now all my music is stored in the back up files of the phone. i go into my music player and there is nothing there. is there something im doing wrong? on top of that all my text messages were erased. anybody got a fix for my problems?
Henrik @ Nov 2nd 2009 12:18PM
Excellent update!
Love the upgrades to the video-gallery, picture-gallery and the general kinetic scrolling.
It is also nice, that the device finally keeps performing properly when multiple apps are open. I have 2 games (yeah yeah just testing, doesn't make sense in the real world), the browser, email and Nimbuzz open at the same time, and it doesn't really seem to be a big deal for it anymore.
