By that I mean an OMAP3430 has a default clock speed of 600 mHz.
I'm guessing they figured they could ridiculously pump up battery life by taking the clock to 550. I'm guessing it still runs like a dream due to the GPU?
Experts comment please.

It's not about the clock speed, rather it's the quality of the processor, and the OMAP3430 kicks ass. It's a lot faster than the 528MHz chipsets for phones being released currently, though it'll be a little slower than the snapdragon phones that are released. The graphics of the card are still nice since it's a dual core processor, the graphics running on the second, of course.

Also, chinpo, I was adding to what you were saying. This thing is still going to run great, but with the extra amount of juice the Droid's beefier hardware is going to require, they probably clocked it slower to level out the battery life, heating, etc.

Except for the fact it's made by motorola, which means it will be sluggish regardless of the processor, have lots of bugs, and probably break within 2 months. Sriously, name a good motorola phone. Add to that the fact that Big Red wants your first born for a monthly fee....no thanks.

I'm curious about the processor issue as well. I will admit that cellphones are not my big thing. But, due to technical and size limitations, wouldn't a 550Ghz processor be fine? Some people seem okay, other not. Plus since Motorola seems to be throwing in a separate GPU unit, doesn't that negate the problem? But like I said, I don't know enough about cellphones to make the call (all puns intended).

i wouldnt worry this phone should have various coprocessors, isnt running sense, and if its like wm will eventually be overclocked back to the standard speed for that chip if not faster.. maybe the moment will be a smidge faster tho

I don't care about the MHZ of the CPU, I want it to be just fast enough to have a crisp interface. Good experience + best possible battery life is the goal.
I want to stick with T-Mo, I'll see what the Behold 2 has to offer first.

Im with you! I believe that the behold will come out with an 800 Mhz cpu, add to that an AMOLED screen and youve got the droid beat on speed and battery life.

Something just doesn't seem right, BGR explicitly stated that the Phone had a Xenon Flash as opposed to a Dual-LED setup. Also, this is the first OMAP3430 device supposed to be clocked lower at 550MHz rather than the default clock speed of 600MHz.
This has lowered my expectations a bit.
I was hoping the Droid/Sholes to be Motorola's saviour and my dream phone. But with specs like these, i'd rather lust after a well constructed N900 ! :(

No Arm processor runs at its default clock for efficiency reasons. The venerable Palm Pre and Idont 3gs are running at less than 500mhz although there are very capable of running at 600mhz. In a desktop, you may want to ry an eke out all available clocks but in a consumer mobile device this is not the case.

My buddy is going to get one of these the first day it comes out. We're going to have a race - his Droid vs my TP2 the stock ROM to do basic things like - open engadget.com and fully load it with a clean cache, start playing a song, create and send an email message. I'll let you guys know how HTC's heavily optimized WinMo 6.1 holds up. Then I'll probably load MightyMike's WinMo 6.5 ROM!

well that pretty much settles that if these are the real specs. i've been trying to get a TP2 for almost a month now (actually got an order in but it's yet to be filled) but in the mean time i've been keeping a close eye on this. but with these specs, i think it pretty much comes down to whether you like WinMo or Android and i think i'll stick to what i know with WinMo at least for now
only glaring difference i see now is the stock 16GB micro SD card. i just bought a 8GB one for my TP2 (placed it the same time as my TP2 order) just cause i couldn't see paying $50+ for a memory card right now and the 8GB was only $20. either way, that point is kind of not an issue since they are both upgradeable and swappable anyway.

Wow, apparently no one on this site knows how to read specs and make a valid judgment.
1) Battery Life: 6 hours of continuous battery life is great in a smart phone today.
2) Dvd quality up to 24 fps (meh, that's just okay. 30 would be preferable) 720x480 resolution is good.
3) Dual LED Flash 5mp cam (good)
4) Has great syncing capabilities (gmail, MS Exchange, etc)
5) Webkit HTML5 browser with Flash support coming out in early 2010
6) Dimensions are virtually the same as the iPhone's with a built in qwerty keyboard (impressive)
7) 3.7" GLASS Capacitive touch screen, 480x854 resolution, 16:9
8) OMAP3430 Processor (which is the SAME processor as the iPhone and Pre, unfortunately clocked a tad slower. This STILL makes it MUCH faster than any other phone using the pos 528MHz processors such as the Hero, Imagio, TP2, and is still faster than the much lower quality, but higher clocked 800MHz processor that is in the upcoming Samsung phones.)
People, this chipset is DUAL CORE. Meaning the graphics run on a separate core. What's a faster desktop? A 3.2GHz processor or a 3.2GHz Dual core processor? And the difference is much more noticeable when that same dual core processor is a higher build quality. Now, everyone is correct in saying the snapdragon processor will run faster than this, but it's not going to be significantly faster. BGR stated himself that the speeds are comparable to the iPhone 3Gs, and no one here can argue that the same processor in that phone is outdated. The iPhone runs really smooth, and we can expect similar performance from the Droid. Better? No, but similar.
If you need a good phone now that will age well, this is probably the only other phone on the market other than the iPhone that will do it. If you can wait, wait for the HD2 or the Android equivalent if WinMo doesn't float your boat. If you're waiting for the sake of having the best technology, enjoy waiting forever.

Well put, @Asia. You'll never own any technology product if you keep complaining that a future release is better than a product that went to market. This is actually a reason for Big Red to get its subscribers excited... it's Android (and Eclair, no less) on GOOD hardware, so they can't cripple it much for once. As for me, I'll be excited when someone gets this thing running 100% on Sprint's much more affordable network. ;) Shit, I'm just happy that there's CDMA iPhone competition for a change... and no, I don't count the Storm.

yeah its 5mp its good the samsung memoir already has 8 mp and Sony Ericson have a 12mp

Do you understand what continuous means? That means if you were using your phone HEAVILY it would last 6 hours. Under normal usage this is going to last more than a day without the need to charge it. A day is 24 hours long, btw.
Both of the "camera first" phones you've listed are very poorly designed outside of their cameras. For more general information, the amount of megapixels =/= good camera. Hell, the enV Touch has one of the best cameras in a phone, and it's only a 3.2 shooter, beating out several 5 mp shooters. Unless you plan on using your phone's camera as a stand alone, you'll probably only be using these pictures for online sharing. Megapixels do not matter so much here versus when they are printed out. I know next to nothing about cameras, but even I know that much.

This phone does NOT have a slow processor. I've compared the speed in terms relative to the iPhone because the iPhone is a great phone. It runs great! Would it be more effective if I said it runs as smooth as the Omnia 2? That phone has an 800MHz single core processor, and THAT phone is slow and laggy. Why? It's got a SINGLE core processor that only clocks at 800MHz. The only thing that 800MHz is doing is straining the battery, and I can tell you right now that phone is going to run hot.
Hell. 1GHz is slow! Why can't my phone run a 4.5GHz quad processor!?!?!?!?

One thing to note is this does have a separate CPU/GPU for graphics, but it is not going to be clocked at 550 Mhz. It will be clocked at 400 or below. I am not saying that as a bad thing. It is just good to note.

its hard to talk about battery life, because it also depends on where you live. In MA, my phone runs down quick... in AZ it can go days with heavy use before needing a charge...

Yes it's capacitive. Every site that has been tracking this phone says it's capacitive. The people with the phone who have tested it and leaked info have confirmed it. Please check before you spread misinformation.

The keyboard on this phone look's awful it's so cramped together. wish it would have resembled the TP2 keyboard. I'm guessing the four buttons on the bottom of the screen are similar to the ps3 touch sensitive.

The dock is actually quite awesome. It has a nighttime and daytime mode, and from there you can set your alarm, view the weather, play music or setup a picture slideshow.
