Microsoft's Windows Mobile 6.5 update guide: no, no, maybe

Alright, so it's no secret that the upgrade path to Windows Mobile 6.5 is pretty limited, but Microsoft has nonetheless gone and laid thing out with another handy upgrade guide to avoid any confusion. The short of it is that those with Windows Mobile 5.0 or 6.0 devices are flat out of luck if they're looking to upgrade to 6.5 (although they may be able to upgrade to 6.0 or 6.1), while users of Windows Mobile 6.1 devices (but not those aforementioned users that have just upgraded to 6.1) may be able to upgrade to 6.5 at some as yet unspecified point in the future. Right now, that latter group is confined to just eight phones (including the likes of the HTC Dash, Snap and Touch Pro2, and the Samsung Jack and Epix), but Microsoft says more devices may be added at a later date. Still confused? Then hit up the read link below for the complete breakdown, and try to forget about that whole Windows Mobile 7 thing for the time being.

Say what you will about their hardware, softeware, etc. Apple got the entire mobile OS upgrade system right. And now Android and WebOS use the same method. Its such a joke that Microsoft has to rebuild its install base after every update because the phone someone buys a month ago won't be able to run the new flavor of WinMo.
And whats even worse is that they won't learn and will just repeat the process with WinMo 7.

Good point, "Its such a joke that Microsoft has to rebuild its install base after every update because the phone someone buys a month ago won't be able to run the new flavor of WinMo."
This nonsense money grabbing, inconvenient virtue is exactly like windows desktop software. Let's hope that the power of a free market will "force" them into intelligent thinking.

Do you just not understand what a difference it makes when you have a dedicated OS for a dedicated piece of hardware?
Windows Mobile devices were designed with guidelines of compatibility, not *rules* of compatibility. It runs on who-the-hell knows how many different devices, and SOME are capable of running the new version while some aren't. It's left up to the manufacturers for the particular hardware which may or may not be supported in the next version.
You can't load the latest and greatest OS on the original iPhone can you? No. Android is *brand new* to the market. Android devices today will not be able to run an Android version released a year and a half from now.

It totally wouldn't be fair if they didn't include the HTC Touch Pro and their variants in the list for 6.5 upgrade eligibility. The Touch Pro and the Touch Pro2 are almost completely identical when it comes to its internals. Don't they even have the same Qualcomm chipset?
Rashyaa @ Oct 7th 2009 2:15AM
yeah they do, but touch pro 2 is soo much faster in comparison, it's massive tweaks or maybe unknown hardware upgrades...
I just sold my touch pro 1...
I don't understand the point of this... THE UPDATE ISN'T OUT, why are you posting it?

Is this a joke? I'm running WinMo 6.5 on a HTC P3600, which started in WM5. xda-developers.com is your friend...
Joseph @ Oct 7th 2009 4:23AM
I agree that xda-developers.com has a lot of good info; but it's also full of junk and completed disorganized. I would prefer official ROMs rather than wasting my life trying to figure out what is going on at that website.

@Joesph
You, my friend, sound a bit lazy.
There is ONE post for downloading your own WM6.5.x kitchen AND there are a ridiculous number of custom ROMs that run WM6.5 and have been since earlier this year in each phone section.
How is that disorganized?

Rojo: "You can't load the latest and greatest OS on the original iPhone can you? No."
BZZZ!!! WRONG! You can.
See the P1 footnote of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPhone_OS_version_history#3.x:_Third_major_release_of_the_iPhone_OS for 3.1 and the remarks at http://www.apple.com/iphone/softwareupdate/.
Some features aren't available on the 1st gen iPhone due to hardware reasons such as A2DP (stereo Bluetooth) since the hardware couldn't do it. However, Apple did omit some features on the 2nd gen (iPhone 3G), like video even though it wasn't a hardware limitation. Some were probably left off due to RAM limitations since the 3GS has more RAM the 1st and 2nd gen.
Joseph @ Oct 7th 2009 4:20AM
Sprint HTC TouchPro better be on the list. As of right now I can't find any info. I see a new official ROM was released at the end of last month, but not for 6.5.
