HTC Imagio for Verizon unboxing and hands-on

The Imagio actually feels high-end enough to justify Snapdragon power, but alas, it's still stuck on the same old 528MHz MSM7600 core -- part of a family of aging processors that has powered many WinMo and Android devices of the past couple years. What this means for you is that you're going to experience some lag navigating through some TouchFLO and stock WinMo 6.5 user elements and web browsing won't be quite as snappy as you'd like (alas, there's no such thing as "fast enough" mobile browsing, is there?), but generally speaking, it's never unbearably slow. We're also not a huge fan of the Imagio's physical buttons below the screen -- though they're separated, they've actually got virtually no feel, so it can be tricky to tease out whether your finger's currently on a button (and if so, which one) without glancing down. Of course, we attribute that to rookie jitters -- we suppose you'd have them memorized within a few days of actually using the phone full-time.

By design, the overall software experience here is virtually identical to that on the Pure, so it really comes down to hardware and carrier; in our opinion, the 3.5mm jack alone is worth the extra $50 that you'll pay for the Imagio, and you won't find many people arguing that Verizon's network sucks compared to AT&T's -- especially when you consider that you've got EDGE / HSDPA in there for global use. Add in the better, more substantial feel to the device, the larger screen, and the trick FLO tuner, and Verizon's entry wins the head-to-head battle here pretty handily; sure, it's still WinMo, but at least it's sucking on some very competitive hardware.

I think we've all read enough reviews to know that Windows Mobile 6.5 is a bust...
So unless you all at Engadget are going to report that Windows Mobile 7 is going to be a free upgrade to any of these phones, I sincerely implore you all not to report on them... Cause I'm kinda of the "who gives a shit" mentality with WM6.5...
I'd rather read about the iPhone OS, Android or web OS anyday of the week... Atleast those platforms were developed from the ground up with a human finger in mind and with a bit of visual eye-candy and flair... And they actually
6.5 is only a bust for people who havent used it.. This is arguably the best handset available in the U.S. spec wise.. It has TV out, a higher res screen than an iphone or pre, mediaflo tv.. Call me when an iphone does live tv streaming to your in dash tv... Call me when an iphone multitasks, or when a pre can record video, or a storm has a decent browser.. I have 4 high quality browsers on my touch pro.. Not counting IE6 which is better than the BB browser anyway.. I can prolly find 7 or 8 wm browsers better than what the storm shipped with.. So if multi tasking, user customizations and real homescreens isnt your thing than cool.. Dont click a wm thread.. But for me I wouldnt get anything else I would feel like im limiting yourself.. So enjoy your phone.. Wm6.5 is old anyways.. Im on wm6.5.1 already and it has several improvements over wm6.5
@ Craig...
Nobody gives two shits and a wad of used toilet paper about your opinion
I'll only be interested in mobile TV when iPhone gets it, and then, only if its free. I've invested too much money and time in my iPhone to even think about changing platforms. Eventually we will get it - and we'll be happy that Apple gave it to us. But first of all, I know Verizon isn't going to have a reasonable price on featues like that anyway.
Windows is best on a desktop or laptop. On phones, it SUCKS - even though it usually offers features other phones don't have. Too expensive.
is the imagio only 6.5 device that is gonna have the weather update on the homescreen like teh sense UI? if it is a 6.5 thing i haven't seen it on the tilt 2 or pure... i really hope that the tilt 2 will have that feature.... anybody?
this sports the newer manilla v2.5, so if you want that on the Tilt2/Pure or another HTC device you need to head on over to XDA/PPCGeeks and the like and get the cabs for the new manilla.
This is not Manilla 2.5. This is an updated version of 2.1. Look at the version number. Manilla 2.5 will have the 3 shortcut icons at the bottom of the Home screen -- just like the Leo (which has Manilla 2.5).
Your right JerryE, i totally missed the 3 shortcuts on the front. Shiot I gotta get this newer Manilla for my Fuze...lol
yes, just look at the video above
so the imagio is 6.5 and sense UI?
As far as I can tell, Engadget is not a big fan of AT&T, and it's really insulting reading some of the stuff. I somehow doubt that if this exact same phone came out for AT&T, they come out as extremely biased.
This is a great looking device and it seems like the FloTV works well. My only concern is that the "dimple" effect around the front outer edge of the phone will end up being a dirt collector.
Nice looking phone aside from that stupid looking trim around the face and the back. How about some metal trim next time? Oh, that's right, Verizon tells HTC to cut costs as much as they can so they can sell it as cheap as they can and still make something. I'll pay for metal thank you very much.
"I'll pay for metal"
Boo fuckin hoo.....You are kind of a whiny little bitch huh? Verizon doesn't control the material just the software attributes.
Good thing you are not on their test panel, they would just give you a binky and a diaper change and tell your dumb ass to get lost.
Boo hoo hooo??? Wonderful, another idiot on this website. I'm sorry, let me rephrase my original comment. I was talking about the industrial design of the product. There, does that make sense now?? And in case you haven't noticed, AT&T clearly had the Touch Diamond2 changed JUST for them. Sprint had the HTC Hero changed JUST for them. Verizon had the Touch Pro changed JUST for them. And you don't think they had ANYTHING to do with that?? Don't sit there like a fucking elitist prick and tell me you know what the fuck is up when you don't know shit.
