iPhone headed to Telus and Bell's fancy new HSPA networks next month?
Rogers is losing its iPhone exclusivity in Canada next month, if a new report by The Globe and Mail is to be believed. Telus and Bell -- traditionally CDMA-bound -- have been prepping GSM networks of their own in a joint effort, and it sounds like they'll be getting this off on the right foot with the iPhone 3GS as a launch device. Nothing's official just yet, but those in the know expect an announcement tomorrow or Wednesday. Rogers isn't the best-loved carrier in Canada, and a bit of choice never hurt anybody, so this seems like pretty good news all-round for our friendly northern neighbors

It would be really nice to see AT&T and one of the canadian carriers enter into some kind of pricing agreement. I mean I can fly Air Canada and collect United miles. I can use my B of A ATM card at Scotia Bank with no fees. Why can't ATT be the first to find a way to not absolutely gouge us when I cross the bridge from Detroit to Windsor?

Ehhh, they'd be better without the iPhone. *yawn***
Can we please have news about a Relevant phone instead of a Horrendously Crippled one for once?
yeah thanks.

Telus: Apple iPhone, HTC Hero, Touch Pro 2
Bell: Apple iPhone, Palm Pre, Blackberry Bold 9000 and Blackberry Bold 9700
Rogers: Apple iPhone, HTC Magic, HTC Dream, Blackberry Bold 9000
Those are some half-decent lineups. Hopefully this (and maybe the new carriers coming in) will shakeup this stagnant wireless market in Canada.

I was with Telus for years. Been with Rogers for a little while now. I never really had problems with Telus but like Rogers more. I have never heard anything positive about Bell.

As you can see.. Bell and Telus are CDMA, but they are now deploying GSM base, HSPA etc.. GSM is the way to go. If AT&T and apple exclusive ends. I'm pretty sure T-mobile will get the iphone also.. there parent company in Germany got it already. But Verizon.. i would say nah!

Isn't Telus using AWS? so wouldn't people be able to just purchase the iPhone for Telus and use it on T-Mobile USA? Everywhere I've seen it says Telus is using 1700MHz, correct me if I can't find the correct bands.

The operative term is "used to be". Telus was actually PCS, which was a major problem in its own right. Both Bell and Telus have been worried about the move to GSM->LTE, but even more annoying is the fact that everyone coming to the Vancouver Olympics this year will be using Rogers - and Vancouver is Telus' home town (formerly known as BC Tel).
Basically everyone sees the writing on the wall and knew they had to move to GSM. But the cost was going to be enormous. So Bell and Telus agreed to roll out GSM hardware in separate cities, Telus in the west and Bell in the east, and share those lines for some period of time. Apparently this is going much faster than I had been led to believe, and it looks like they'll be ready to steal back some share from Rogers by November.
Good on ya!

JPZ has the correct angle here, the fact that the launch device is an iPhone is irrelevant, what is relevant is the fact that it is running on an HSPA network. This has major implications for Canadians, it means that Telus (and perhaps BCE, who have apparently been investing in an HSPA network as well), are now able to compete effectively with Rogers with the same device linup, ie., BlackBerry Bold, Nokia E71/72 and numerous other really nice "european" devices.
For Telus it is a no-brainer really, as the predominant wireless telephony standard world-wide is GSM/UMTS(HSPA) based, thus when European travellers have been coming to Canada for skiing/vacation/business etc, only Rogers has had access to their very lucrative roaming minutes (roaming is over a dollar a minute). Investing in a GSM/UMTS network in Canada, Telus are now able to share in that pie, while at the same time they are able to bring devices such as this one to the Canadian consumer.
We will all be the better for it. If you want to register your interest for an iPhone with Telus, I discovered this link http://telusmobility.com/iphone. Select your province and fill out the form.
Seems the devices will be available in November.
