BlackBerry Desktop Manager for Mac now available, we go hands-on
Today is the day that the BlackBerry-toting Mac faithful have been waiting for. After years of "making do" with less-than-desirable options like PocketMac and Missing Sync, RIM has taken it upon itself to finally release a home-cooked solution for Mac users who simply want to back up their devices without having to install a virtual machine or revert to a Windows PC. Well, it's been a long month and a half since they first announced it was coming, but BlackBerry Desktop Manager for Mac has finally landed (officially, we mean), and we're glad to say it definitely gets the job done. Check out our full impressions and a quick rundown of the big features after the break.
RIM has done a pretty good job of translating its Windows software to Mac, removing most of the bloat but maintaining the same core functionality. The UI is super simple, and, unlike on DM for Windows, the main options aren't hidden behind unnecessary menus and sections. The main functions (backup and restore, information syncing) are clearly marked and work exactly how they should. We're big fans of Google Sync, so we don't have much use for the calendar and contacts backup, but the notes and tasks syncing are both useful to have.
Additionally, the functionality from BlackBerry Media Sync has been integrated into Desktop Manager, further proving that this isn't just a one trick pony. Unlike certain other smartphones, the BlackBerry doesn't actually show up in iTunes, but you can choose certain playlists that will sync up to the device -- as long as it's not DRM protected. It's a solid integration and will be more than sufficient for most people.
Backup and restore work pretty much as you'd expect them to, and there's nothing revolutionary in that regard. We like how you can still selectively back up certain databases (BlackBerry Messenger contacts anyone?) if you don't need a full backup, and you can also selectively replace certain databases just like you can on a PC. The one major difference between the Mac and PC versions of the software is the firmware upgrade process. At this point, installing non-official OSs from a Mac is a no go. Unlike on the PC, you don't install the installer and then get prompted for the upgrade. Instead, the software connects to RIMs servers and checks for software updates that way, only allowing you to install OS builds that RIM explicitly says you can. We're sure some crafty users will figure out a workaround in due time, but for now, if you want to load an unofficial OS, you'll have to go back to the PC version.
In the end, Desktop Manager for Mac is a necessity for anyone with a Mac and a BlackBerry. We can't even begin to say how grateful we are that RIM has finally decided to pay some attention to the sizable number of non-PC users that have been stuck with poor alternatives for way too long. It's taken long enough, but at least the guys in Waterloo managed to do it right.

Palm, take note.
ridley182 @ Oct 2nd 2009 2:29PM
Damn! Beaten.
But yeah, If RIM can do it, so can they. Stop being a parasite Palm.
Typical Engadget Tech-Nerd @ Oct 2nd 2009 3:25PM
Palm is not RIM and that's why Palm fell from grace years ago. At once time they were a respectable company but now they are just leeches. What is happening to Pre users now that they can't suckle from Apple's iTunes teats? Probably walking around in a daze wishing they'd bought iPhones instead.
How much would it cost for Palm to design it's own software? I guess they feel pretty silly that they were advertising that the Pre syncs with iTunes. First they were thieves, now they're just liars.
swimtedswim @ Oct 2nd 2009 2:28PM
yea for a second there i thought rim pulled a palm 8)
Rob @ Oct 2nd 2009 2:31PM
Thank you RIM. Downloading now will install later. Like the look of the new UI; minimalist.
John @ Oct 2nd 2009 3:28PM
Hopefully they port the UI design over to the aging Desktop Manager on Windows.
stscdr @ Oct 2nd 2009 2:33PM
Just downloaded it and it seems to be working great on my Curve 8330!!! Great UI and easy to use, way to go RIM...
Bob Atkinson @ Oct 2nd 2009 2:37PM
Looks like they haven't worked out all the bugs in the Mac version yet. I just downloaded it and synced my 8830 (OS 4.2.2.123). It told me there were upgrades to several apps on it -- I've tried to run the updater twice and all it does is lock up the phone (solid red light), requiring a hard reset or battery pull.
Oh well ...
Andrew T. @ Oct 2nd 2009 3:02PM
Yikes. That's some ancient OS you have there! I think that was the initial OS that was shipped with the 8830? (This doesn't help you but how are you even using your phone, I remember the first time I turned it on, bugs galore!)
scott @ Oct 2nd 2009 2:37PM
Love how it deletes my data then reports sync errors! Really fun to open up your contacts and have nothing there!
Jose @ Oct 2nd 2009 2:59PM
same thing occurred to me.. im loving it so far. My address book is super clean....
Bingo @ Oct 3rd 2009 12:05PM
Damn. The biggest reason I switched from a BlackBerry to the iPhone, was the syncing capabilities of my contacts. BlackBerry had screwed it for so long, and I was felt it severely hampered my efforts to have my contacts THE SAME across multiple devices, and new contacts/phone numbers entered on any of the devices would sync globally in my loop. MissingSync was shit, and everyone knew it.
If they the contacts syncing is still screwed, then there goes my reason to switch back to a BlackBerry.
The Angry Intern @ Oct 2nd 2009 2:40PM
crap, I don't have my BB USB cable with me at work. I'll have to check this out when I get home
Vic De Zen @ Oct 2nd 2009 2:40PM
Sweet. I will look into it this weekend.
traceroute @ Oct 2nd 2009 2:41PM
When is there gonna be a Linux version?
codemaker @ Oct 2nd 2009 4:28PM
You may want to look into barry. It supports tethering, syncing, and backup and restore of blackberries on linux. You can't do OS upgrades with it though, AFAIK.
bsbeamer @ Oct 2nd 2009 2:46PM
works perfectly!
OSX 10.5.8
Entourage 2008 (set to sync with Apple Address Book and Apple Calendar)
Verizon Blackberry Curve 8330 ver 4.5.0.138
They worked out a lot of the bugs that were in build 75 (the leaked version) vs this official release (build 89).
No duplicate contacts.
Calendar actually transfers properly.
Notes and tasks are good to go.
Just wish it was a little faster, but I'll deal with it - I'll take RELIABLE over speed any day.
Haven't tried the iTunes stuff yet...
gotsmart @ Oct 2nd 2009 2:48PM
It's worth noting that this appears to be compatible with Leopard and higher.
Dan @ Oct 2nd 2009 3:27PM
I lost all my contacts, I thought it would sync up with my contacts in address book? What did I do wrong and how can I correct it. I keep on receiving sync error when it goes to the contact section!!
But What About... @ Oct 2nd 2009 3:11PM
The big glaring miss at this point is that under the Media area, only music is listed. I have searched and have yet to figure out how to add Video or Images under that area. Am I missing where I can do that or is this application actually not capable of doing that? The Missing Sync allows me to sync ANYTHING.
pete @ Oct 2nd 2009 3:13PM
I tried this route, but I honestly don't see how this is better than the Missing Sync. Sure it is free, but it doesn't support Bluetooth syncing which is extremely useful.
pete @ Oct 2nd 2009 3:17PM
and just to add to this, I am astonished that engadget has been able to use Google Sync successfully. I have tried it many times, but no matter how many different methods I try, it simply duplicates my contacts and calendar items. I have seen hundreds of forum pages complaining about google's lack of help on these issues, so tell me engadget are you ACTUALLY using google sync or do you just suck their dick for a living?
Dhruv @ Oct 2nd 2009 3:20PM
I''m using google sync and have no problems.
I think you have to make sure your contacts in gmail are organized correctly, like ones you don't use often are in all contacts, so that syncing won't be a problem.
Chris B. @ Oct 2nd 2009 3:28PM
@pete, the fix for this is all over Crackberry.com & BlackBerryOS.com. Google Sync isn't that great of a solution, but it works within its indicated limits. Read up at those two sites - you'll need DM to delete the Calendar/Contact DB, set your default calendar Sync connects to, and run Google Sync again. You're stuck with the one calendar until RIM upgrades to BIS 2.8 (and gets a few firmware updates out) - and those new BIS manuals have been on RIM's site for weeks. Read up, or piss off.
Dhruv @ Oct 2nd 2009 3:18PM
I haven't installed it yet, but is there any issues regarding contacts/calendar that is being handled with Google Sync?
e.g. all contacts erased on blackberry after this is installed and would delete all contacts on gmail account?
erik @ Oct 2nd 2009 3:21PM
though i haven't tried blackberry's DM, i do use missing sync for the blackberry pearl that lives in the family. one feature i LOVE is auto-sync via bluetooth. i have missing sync on my laptop. when my wife gets home from work, i simply open the laptop and BAM, the sync happens automatically. if RIM's software can't do this, i don't want it. for ease of use, auto-sync via bluetooth is unbeatable.
Hydra @ Oct 2nd 2009 3:57PM
Hmm, i synced my Bold, updated everything, and now when i click my "open applications" button i see an app called "Visual Voice Mail", but it doesn't work... Is RIM adding a new visual voice mail feature?
Logan @ Oct 2nd 2009 4:46PM
Talked to RIM support today and they said this program is not supported with Snow Leopard.
Dan @ Oct 2nd 2009 6:47PM
WOW, now they say it don't work with snow leopard!!! I lost every current contact, only now I have to go to my windows cpu to mobile me old info.....smh!!
sosodeath @ Oct 2nd 2009 10:13PM
didn't work for me. i had to force quit everytime i launch it. using snow leopard and 8900. i got several errors when attempting to sync, although it told me it sync'd...EXCEPT for the music. it just freezes and i have to force quit.
seansli @ Oct 2nd 2009 5:03PM
One thing I'd like to add is that it intelligently resolves conflicts in Contacts syncing.
I sync my Google, Address Book, iPod, and Blackberry contacts, and it would prompt me for any conflicts between any of these, including when there were three versions of one contact I had (one on Google, one on Blackberry, and one on Address Book).
It's a cool version.
Sean @ Oct 2nd 2009 6:47PM
I guess I must be one of the few people with a problem syncing my contacts... I get an error every time. Blackberry Curve, OS 10.5.8, not quite sure of the issue here. Between this official release and the one that leaked earlier in September my issue with duplicated contacts was resolved (fortunately because I was unable to manually delete the duplicates), but I'm not sure how to fix the sync problem. Sigh.
Michael @ Oct 2nd 2009 9:01PM
I was using the leaked version from a month ago with no issues updated to the release today and now keeps giving syncing errors. Update made it useless.
3XMS @ Oct 2nd 2009 9:09PM
Is this what I use to finally be able to sync my Audible audio books over the the Blackberry (Curve 8330)? Because just moving them over manually does not work.
shinbunboi @ Oct 2nd 2009 10:45PM
money, been usin the leaked version for a min now...super grateful to RIM for Mac lovin:-) no more reason to ever use a pc again, hopefully
brianhenn @ Oct 3rd 2009 12:31AM
So it seems like syncing issues with Snow Leopard resolves if you run the DM app in 32-bit mode in Snow Leopard.
To do this, select the DM App in the Application Folder and right click or Command-I to get the Get Info panel. There you can check off '32-bit mode'. Do not run check off the option to run in Rosetta if given the option.
After that, my sync issues resolved themselves.
OS 10.6.1 w/ Rogers Curve 8900.
LZG2005 @ Oct 3rd 2009 12:54AM
I don't see the ability to chose 32-bit mode in the "Get Info screen". I only see the Rosetta option. Any idea why?
Mike @ Oct 3rd 2009 7:33AM
My system freezes up. All I tried to do was overwrite my desktop ical data to my verizon curve. Had to force quit the app twice and reboot my laptop once. Oh well. Back to markspace...until something better comes out. Damn, I wish someone would figure out how to force isync to behave more like the pc side: device overwrites desktop, quick syncs instead of the 4 score and 7 years crap, consistently dependable syncs... I've even tried to sync using bb desktop via vmware, but have troubles with categories, etc. and take too much time haulin the data back to mac...double damn. Why can't we all just get along????
running a macbook w/10.5.8
and vw bb curve w/4.5.0.138
Jordan K @ Oct 3rd 2009 4:59PM
still disappointed there is no support for 10.4 users...lame
Todd M @ Oct 4th 2009 9:01AM
I am also having problems with sync'ing my Storm with the Mac version. It fails during/after syncing the contacts with a generic "Sync error". I had a similar issue when I was sync'ing with the Windows version. From what I can figure, it had a hard time when you had separate groups of contacts. In other words, I had my wife's contact group separate from my contact group in Outlook. When you would sync it with the Windows version, it wouldn't pick one group's contacts. Looks like all of the extra time RIM spent getting the software out in September--correction October-- wasn't spent on getting it right...
DCP @ Oct 6th 2009 6:08PM
Disastrously bad
Have to sync Entourage with all Apple apps before you can sync with blackberry
Numerous field incompatibilities between the three which asks me to manually resolve everytime it syncs
And has managed to delete a bunch of phone numbers from my contacts
This is worse than PocketMac which just duplicated information instead of deleting it.
WL @ Oct 22nd 2009 12:02AM
I'm using OS 10.5.8 and have tried syncing my contacts to my Bold through Address Book. the Desktop Manager chronically tells me the sync is complete and then leaves out about 20 of my 190 contacts in Address Book. Anyone else had the same problem or know how to fix this? I've tried replacing all contacts on the phone multiple times.
Jordan @ Nov 12th 2009 12:58PM
Lost all my contacts on my blackberry while trying to use the mac desktop manager, hadnt used it before and the irony is I was tryna save all my contacts onto my computer so I can send my blackberry in for a repair but keep all my contacts and in doing so desktop manager deleted them all... The program doesnt point out what to do clearly and I only now know how it works by trial and error and in the process losing my whole address book... extremely frustrating and disappointing program, I am pretty good with computers and am cautious with such things anyway so am surprised this happened... am more angry at the program rather than the inconvenience of losing all contacts
