Google adds support for push Gmail via Exchange ActiveSync
Google Sync's pretty awesome as it is, but it's had one glaring flaw in its implementation: no support for Gmail, just Calendar and Contacts, which means you aren't able to get true push email delivered. Well, they've gone ahead and completed the holy Google trinity today with the introduction of Gmail support into the Exchange ActiveSync mix, so any phone with Exchange support should theoretically be able to get in on the action. We say "theoretically" because they're only quoting support for the iPhone and Windows Mobile at this point, but it seems like anything that can speak the EAS protocol should be able to make this happen. Let us know your trials, tribulations, and successes getting this set up in comments, won't you?

KRock @ Sep 22nd 2009 12:59PM
Works for me!! Finally! This is a good day for Gmail users.
Dunch @ Sep 22nd 2009 1:09PM
Wait so if I have an iPhone, how do I set it up for push email?
kitsune @ Sep 22nd 2009 1:38PM
Same question here, I tried it on an ipod touch, using the account that already works for calenders and contacts, and it doesn't work.
Frick @ Sep 22nd 2009 1:26PM
Great news...if you do not already use ActiveSync to an Exchange server...only one ActiveSynce account per iPhone, it appears...
rothgar @ Sep 22nd 2009 2:23PM
Yep, same goes for Windows Mobile, Android, and webOS. This isn't really a solution for those of us that already use Exchange. But really, 10 minute sync is more than enough for me.
e @ Sep 22nd 2009 2:39PM
wait...so no app for that?
Erik @ Sep 22nd 2009 1:47PM
I now have this setup, and the push is very quick in testing, but it seems to take a few seconds to download the body of the email.
Strange. Maybe just a kink.

what version of Google Sync is this?
canobeano @ Sep 22nd 2009 2:22PM
It seems to "work", but its REALLY slow. Really, really slow.
Alan @ Sep 22nd 2009 2:55PM
Awesome! I hope they'll add tasks sometime soon too....
Pradeep @ Sep 22nd 2009 2:13PM
How I wish that iphone supported more than one Exchange Account. Looks like I cannot have this since I already have an Exchange Account configured on my iPhone.
Nikhil @ Sep 22nd 2009 2:17PM
anyone know how the exchange stuff works on winmo compared to the seven email client?
pierre henri @ Sep 22nd 2009 2:20PM
Is it still working?
I tried it 10 minutes ago and it worked fine, but now I can't have the push anymore.
And it seems the Sub folders management is not working as well (yes I have checked the folders management settings on my phone)
David @ Sep 22nd 2009 2:37PM
Same here. I figure their servers are probably getting hit very hard. I have mine set to sync manually. I'll give the "push" email a try later on....
Who? @ Sep 22nd 2009 2:45PM
Sweet! Push Spam! Now I can be bothered instantaneously by emails I don't care much about.
tunderd @ Sep 22nd 2009 2:50PM
This works just fine with PalmPre. Just follow these directions (http://google.com/support/mobile/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=138636) and you are gtg :)
luthan @ Sep 22nd 2009 3:44PM
that sucks as I already use activesync for my work exchange email
i only need push for my gmail so i can see when i get a google voice sms message, but right now that is being taken care of by some filters and prowl :)
Michal @ Sep 22nd 2009 10:43PM
does it work on s60?
Ran Shenhar @ Sep 22nd 2009 4:46PM
So - on a WinMo device, how can I do more than one ActiveSync servers?
Obviously I need my work email, but I'd be happy to add my Gmail as well...
John @ Sep 22nd 2009 5:34PM
Works great with Nokia Mail For Exchange. Since I was using it for contacts and calendar already the mail is a bonus!
Terence @ Sep 23rd 2009 12:15AM
This was fail when I tried it when this post first went up. My iphone wasn't updating, and when it finally did it wouldn't load the email. I even deleted all my mail accounts on my iphone to try and fix it. But now (9:15 p.m. pacific) it works great. I just got an email and my iphone beeped before my Gmail Notifier Plus (win7) or my Firefox Gmail Permatab announced. I hope it stays this way!

Google yet again underwhelms.
Ioskevich @ Sep 24th 2009 3:37AM
Works fine on UIQ3 as well...
Tony @ Oct 24th 2009 12:56AM
I have an iPhone and I've been using google sync with no problems for a while. I do wish that the iPhone supported more than one exchange account. Android might be the next device for me....
