The
Leo is fast becoming HTC's latest worst kept secret. Pics and video are popping up everywhere with the latest set giving a full visual walkthrough of what appears to be TouchFlo 3D 2.6 riding Windows 6.5. Even better,
ai.rs blog claims that Leo is indeed capacitive -- something strongly suggested by the
multi-touch video leaked a few days ago -- and not some
fancy resistive touchscreen tech. We've got backside action now too, sporting a big "HTCPRO.Three" stamp we presume heralds Pro3 branding whenever this 1GHz Snapdragon handset launches. But man, that 4.3-inch, 800x480 display's looking positively massive next to the 3.2-inch version found on the
Touch Diamond2. Check the back after the break.
Update: Video showing Leo's very snappy, finger-centric UI added after the break.

I have had the HTC TouchHD for 11 months now and even if lately I also bought an N97 and an Hero the TouchHD still is my everyday companion.
I will pension it only when l'll be able to put my fingers on the Leo and whoever will buy it from me will do a very good business indeed because it still is the best win mob phone money can buy (yes MUCH better than the new TP2, although I must admit that I've never had the luck of seeing one of Toshiba's TG01 in the tridimentional world because it's not imported in Scandinavia).
I just hope that HTC will keep touchFLO 3D on winmob phones (or at least on the Leo) because although I love SenseUI on my Hero, I think thet TouchFLO is far better suited to win mob.

The leaked slide said it's capacitive. There's no silo for a stylus either, which doesn't definitely mean one thing or another, but it's definitely the type of show of confidence in finger-only operation befitting a capacitive screen. And if HTC were working on a resistive tech with multitouch capabilities we would've heard about it before they got what looks to be pretty near final hardware. We already know they're working on a capacitive stylus, which unfortunately doesn't look like it'll fit the Leo.
So yes, Engadget editors, the Leo is a capacitive Windows Mobile device. Finally, a Windows Mobile device that you guys won't lament for having a resistive screen.
On a related note, i wonder if the larger screen more to do with the fact that Windows Mobile elements can be small, and capacitive screens lack the accuracy of the resistive screens that Windos Mobile seems to be made for.
chcox @ Sep 18th 2009 11:13AM
Capacitive screens are more accurate than resistive because of the technology. In resistive screens the gap between layers can cause inaccuracies. If you open up a drawing program and press down with the stylus the point that is registered and a pixel is illuminated will always vary and not predictably. Capacitive screens measure capacitance at the point and is extremely accurate. The only reason you don't think it is, is because you have fat inaccurate fingers. I am used to the exact point my finger registers and am extremely accurate.
Capacitive technology is more accurate and that is fact based on how it works. Real world accuracy varies from person to person because of the wide area of your finger compared to a tiny point of a stylus.
But, I absolutely hate pulling out a retarded toothpick to do anything because resistive screens are not as accurate with your finger than capacitive. I want to select something and work with it NOW and not inconveniently pull a stylus out each time.
Resistive technologies in these phones will die out as winmo is shifing to a more finger friendly design.

I'm in love with this phone!

Goodness this phone is massive. I knew it was big but this comparison puts it in perspective..

please,please,PLEASE COME TO VERIZON
e @ Sep 18th 2009 9:18AM
Sweet, can't wait for this to come stateside...in like 12 months...and locked down as a carrier exclusive.

Did I see a screen that said something along the lines of 'CDMA Privacy Mode'? Does that mean it is definitely coming to Sprint or VZW?
Salem @ Sep 18th 2009 10:04AM
Very nice interface and the specs are awesome :)
I am curious on the how long it will take before you need to recharge it. With a 1230 mAh battery, a 4.3 inch display and a 1GHZ processor I'm thinking that it will not last long at all :(

@Plexus
I couldn't agree more. I have the Touch HD as well and love it. Although it is back in for a camera repair at HTC at the moment. I am currently stuck using my iphone 3G. I don't hate the iphone but I love my Touch HD and all the things I can do with it. I am not as nearly constrained as I am with the iphone. I also agree about the TP2 only on the grounds that it doesn't have a headphone jack. Otherwise I might consider making the switch if AT&T ever releases with their version. The marriage of WM and a capacitive screen would probably make me jump ship to the LEO.
Some people don't like the size but I do. I use my vehicles bluetooth when driving and otherwise would keep it in a pocket or a belt clip. Screen realestate is always at a premium and I don't see a problem with this device. With all the multimedia capabilities that current devices offer, I would like the choice of larger screens. There will always be devices with nice smallish touchscreens, aka palm pre. There are very few like this out there. If I need something even smaller I will just pop my sim into a little "dumb phone" for the day and not worry about it. The idea that you can only have one phone is like only having one computer. I personally have 5 computer just myself and between my wife and kids we have 8 total. I also have four cell phones. I only really use three but I always have a backup.
Ineptitude @ Sep 19th 2009 2:16AM
@ RWK: Damn! I thought I had a lot of computers. I have 5 myself and 7 for the whole family. I have a high end machine for Cad work, a server for the house and security, one to run my CNC mill, One at the office, and I count the PS3 as it has linux on it and it does the entertainment work. What do you do with your 5?
In general: I love the idea of this phone. I have been waiting for a high function phone for a while (I still use my SE W810i). It looks like Oct 6th will see a bunch of WM6.5 phones. Will we see this one? Or should I get the Acer F1?
@WM haters: If you can't understand how to customize and use an operating system then you are right - you are better off using what you CAN understand. Apple may be right for you. Android has the potential to be great - but the dough hasn't cooked fully yet. Get what's right for you and stop being flaming fanboys!

That is a pretty ghey song. Nice phone though.

omg this phone looks absolutely amazing. i still don't know if i can give up my physical keyboard though so maybe the Touch Pro 3 will be similar in specs. i really just want that sexy 1GHz Snapdragon processor. i'm tired of my phones being sluggish all the time.
Jim @ Sep 18th 2009 3:41PM
Its still a Windows Mobile device! this would have been TOP NOTCH on Android
WM needs to just DIE OFF!! LOL! :D
dbtimes @ Sep 19th 2009 2:36AM
I really like what I see in the video of the phone. I am going with the TP2 on Sprint for now but when and if this becomes available I will be adding it to my plan.
BTW-anyone know the title of the song and the artist? Thanks
