HTC Tattoo (aka, Click) brings Android, Sense UI to all
This one sure took awhile but the oft leaked HTC Click has been renamed and kicked out the door as the Tattoo. While HTC is light on specs with the press release, we know it has a 3.2 megapixel autofocus camera, 3.5-mm headset jack, and microSD expansion. And besides being small and compact, the Tattoo can be personalized with owner-designed covers -- hence the name. The HTC Tattoo lands in Europe early October before hitting select global markets in the months to follow.
Update: And... out pop the specs: 528MHz Qualcomm MSM7225 processor, 512MB/256MB ROM/RAM, 106 x 55.2 x 14-mm / 113 grams, 2.8-inch touchscreen LCD pushing 240x320 QVGA pixels, 900/2100MHz HSPA/UMTS and quad-band GSM/EDGE, internal GPS, 802.11b/g WiFi, digital compass, accelerometer, and Bluetooth 2.0. Not bad for a mass-market device.

That screen won't be pretty, but I wish my G1 had that much memory. That's almost as much RAM as the Hero. Sadface.

It's great to see some entry level Android devices, but I have my concerns over the QVGA screen. It'll mean that all of the applications currently available probably won't work and will need to be refactored.
Say what you like about the iPhone, but it's one screen resolution to develop for and nothing else. This cuts down the complexity significantly.
We're starting to see Android become just as messy as WinMo did.

I don't think the screen res will be much of an issue program-wise. It's a common resolution and, more importantly, a traditional 3:4 aspect ratio. The screen is on the small side for a touch only device (no physical keyboard), but the low-res will be less demanding on the processor and the battery. I'm sure in this case, HTC chose the low-res screen to keep the cost down. Without a doubt, the screens of the iPhone, Hero, etc. will all be much nicer. It's nice that HTC is providing a phone with these specs at a (presumably) lower cost. The Tatoo will need to debut under $100 with carrier subsidies, but with iPhone 3G 8GB refurbished phones available for $49, this will need to get to that point or lower to even have a chance. It's basically going to need to be $10 or even free on contract.
