AT&T rolling out MMS to iPhone on September 25, tethering 'in the future'
AT&T has just announced that MMS -- a much-ballyhooed feature of iPhone OS 3.0 -- will finally be hitting AT&T on September 25. There's still no date for tethering, though the company is holding the line that it'll be offered "in the future." Expanding on the logic behind the tethering delay, they're saying that "by its nature, this function could exponentially increase traffic on the network, and we need to ensure that some of our current upgrades are in place before we can deliver the expanded functionality with the excellent performance that customers expect." We're no network engineers, but "exponentially increase traffic" and "AT&T" are two things we don't typically like to hear in the same sentence -- let's hope the 850MHz, 7.2Mbps, and backhaul upgrades they're cranking on right now go a long way toward sorting that out. As for MMS, they're acknowledging that the release "does indeed fall a few days past the official end of summer," arguing that their support of more iPhone customers than any other carrier in the world made a positive launch experience a bit of a challenge. Of course, virtually every other phone AT&T sells (and has sold for the past several years) supports the same tech, so this feels like a pretty active admission that iPhone users blaze through data-rich features at a pace that the carrier has been ill-equipped to handle.

Welcome to 2002!

beat me to it.
SoCoolCurt (PSN: KillaKornbread - XBL: SoCoolCurt) @ Sep 3rd 2009 4:02PM
my thoughts exactly. the iPhone gets another basic phone feature and it's breaking news?
el Hefe Weizen @ Sep 3rd 2009 3:16PM
I love how the keynote speaker in the screen shot for this article looks so outlandishly excited to announce MMS....Honestly, it looks like he just had a bad #2 accident.
Scott @ Sep 3rd 2009 3:57PM
Sweet! I can't wait! It's about bloody time! And I've seen some network improvements in my area. Speed tests went from being around 800 to 1.4 almost consistantly.
prsetup21 @ Sep 3rd 2009 4:54PM
It's about time! Better late then never! I hope that AT&T does their homework real good on there network and there systems when the time comes to launch the tethering. My prayers are with you! Lol.
JustMe @ Sep 3rd 2009 4:21PM
wow... thanks AT&T, a feature every other phone has had since 2004, and something every other iPhone user in the world has had for 3 months... I hate AT&T
Randy @ Sep 3rd 2009 4:25PM
Wow MMS a whole 4 days after the end of (late) summer. As much as I want Tethering, Right now, I'm not so optimistic that at&t is going to let that one out with out a "nominal" fee.
Tor Slettnes @ Sep 4th 2009 1:43PM
'Course, I have unlimited tethering for $15/month ("data unlmited") with my "dumbphone" (Sony Ericsson C905a). As I did with my previous phones, Nokia N97/N85/N95, Motorola MING A1200, Motorola KRZR K1, and so on and so forth.
Again, welcome to 2004.
Tor Slettnes @ Sep 4th 2009 1:44PM
BTW: Yes, I am aware that I am violating the AT&T ToS. However it is only for occasional use (e.g. when travelling), so I don't feel too bad for them...
Sulley @ Sep 3rd 2009 4:56PM
Anyone know how AT&T will charge for this? Will it fall under the data plan (not likely at all), will the text plans be changed to include MMS messages, or will there be a new category? I looked all over the AT&T site and couldn't find any details.
Scott @ Sep 3rd 2009 5:10PM
If you have a messaging plan, then MMS is included. For instance, I have the unlimited text plan, which on any other phone, includes MMS and video. So, if you have a messaging plan, it will cost you nothing extra and it will just cound as a text.
Sulley @ Sep 3rd 2009 5:30PM
Not to doubt you, but AT&T has done EVERYTHING possible to nickle and dime iPhone accounts for everything they can charge for (and treat them differently than every other phone they have ever carried). Their website still specifically lists all of their iPhone Text Plans as SMS messaging only (including the Unlimited plan for an individual line, which costs $20/month). The only messaging plan I can find for the iPhone that states it includes text, photos, videos, and instant messaging is their Family Unlimited Messaging Plan ($30/month/group).
I'm going to wait until AT&T clarifies this officially. I was hoping they had, but they didn't think that annoucing the availability of MMS would inspire questions of cost (because they don't want us to think about it). Make any assumptions and you just might pay for it.
William @ Sep 3rd 2009 5:57PM
how exactly has at&t nickeled and dimed iPhone customers more than any of their others? they have the same rate plans as any other customer on their network. it's not their fault apple decided to wait 2 years before including a 5 year old, but don't start making crap up about how they're charging iPhone customers more.
jbirney @ Sep 4th 2009 9:28AM
I agree with Sully. We have a family unlimited messaging plan for myself, my wife and our son. I had hacked my iPhone so I thought things were good..until I saw that AT&T was charging us for the MMS message. When I call they told me its not for the MMS itself but because the picture message had to be sent over their data networks, the other phones dont have a data plan. Thus even thought we have unlimited messaging we would have to get unlimited data plans on the other two phones or pay for each MMS on them.
Scott @ Sep 4th 2009 1:40PM
@ jbirney
I'm not sure who you talked to, but if you have the unlimited plan, then MMS (picture and video is included). yes, it does use data to send, however, att doesn't charge you data.
http://www.wireless.att.com/cell-phone-service/services/serviceDetails.jsp?LOSGId=&skuId=sku1160055&catId=cat1470003
Read that. That's the unlimited messaging plan for any of their phones, except for the iPhone. Once we get MMS on the 25th, we will fall right into that plan if you already have the unlimited plan. So quit thinking att is going to charge us more, because that is simply NOT true!
Tor Slettnes @ Sep 4th 2009 1:56PM
Sorry to burst your bubble, but AT&T is *definitely* charging more for iPhone plans than for the exact same set of features on "normal" data plans. Specifically, the unlimited data portion is *mandatory* for the iPhone, and is priced at $30/month; I pay $15/month for unlimited data (which I use both with the Sony Ericsson C905a, and a Nokia N97).
The difference is $360 over the two-year iPhone contract term. That's how they are able to provide such a hefty subsidy (around $400) for that thing.
Scott @ Sep 4th 2009 3:18PM
@Tor Slettnes
Sorry to burst your bubble, but the reason you're getting $15/mo
unlimited data is because that SE phone is just a stupid feature
phone and the N97 isn't offered, so their network doesn't think about
it being a smart phone. I do believe that a data plan is *required*
for ANY smart phone AT&T sells. If they don't list it as a smart
phone, then sure, you can get unlimited data at $15/mo. Verizon
charges the same exact prices for data on smart phones. And why would
any one purchase a smart phone if they aren't going to have a data
plan? What's the point? Also, what's wrong with them charging an
iPhone customer that same as a BB customer? Even considering that the
iPhone user will probably consume more data. You're argument is
irrelevant because you can't just buy an iPhone (even from a private
seller) and get away with the $15/mo data plan, because they know
what device you're using. And if you are getting away with that,
consider yourself very lucky! It's $15 more a month... is it really
breaking the bank that bad? lol
nthn @ Sep 3rd 2009 6:22PM
I can't believe AT&T still doesn't have this for iPhones. Canadian iPhones got it with the 3.0 update.
Naples_Dmarko @ Sep 3rd 2009 9:39PM
HAHAHAHA!
Almost laughable. But then again , most of Europe hadn't supported MMS either.
Man..I'd hate to be an Iphone user. Everywhere you turn around you are being charged for one thing or another.
At least WinMo or Maemo devices you can score free apps.
Dean @ Sep 7th 2009 12:51AM
There are TONS of free apps for the iPhone. Every phone costs money to use and operate; the iPhone is no exception, and it doesn't cost any more than any other PDA-type phone so I'm not sure why you're saying "Everywhere you turn around you are being charged for one thing or another." A WinMo phone's monthly bill would cost the same as an iPhone.
David @ Sep 6th 2009 2:35AM
Im confused...Everyone talks about how expensive the iphone is...whats the difference between it and blackberry?
Iphone - 30.00 per/month for data
Blackberry - 29.99 Per/Month for data

Texting For Both Would Be 20....
Rate plan for both the same.....
WTF is the difference?
Tor Slettnes @ Sep 4th 2009 2:30PM
If you are comparing with their smartphone plans (i.e. BlackBerry, WinMo, E71x/Mako, etc) then yes the iPhone plan costs the same; however the data portion is *mandatory* only on the iPhone.
Compared with "standard" data plans (and feel free to use it with any unlocked phone you buy, e.g. the Nokia N- and E-Series), you are paying $360 more over the two-year contract term for unlimited data.
Dean @ Sep 7th 2009 12:56AM
@Tor Slettness: Data is mandatory on all of AT&T's PDA-type phones now. Verizon is the same way. I'm not sure about Sprint or T-Mo.
Ryder @ Sep 4th 2009 3:55PM
The headline should be "Sometime in the future the iPhone will have the same features as the free phones you get with a service contract!"
Justin @ Sep 6th 2009 2:02AM
Starting Sunday 9/6 All Smart phones on ATT Activated on/after Sunday will be REQUIRED as in you can not take it off to be on a Unlimited data plan.
tommygun @ Sep 5th 2009 12:55PM
FYI you could get a WAY cheaper plan at Sprint and save tons. 450 minutes unlimited data, navigation, text picture mail, free mobile to mobile calling, free minutes start at 7pm, 5 more dollars get them at 6pm! BUY a Pre, Hero, BB Tour, Curve, Touch Pro 2, Instinct HD (5 Megapixal camera), and spend 69.99 a month. Screw the Iphone its not worth it! Oh did I mention that depending on where you work or bank you get a discount on your service plan? Bank at a credit union and save 10% off your bill every month and it waives the act fee and upgrade fee!
Dean @ Sep 7th 2009 12:54AM
For some people, it's worth a little more money to actually be able to use their phones in places other than just major metro areas.
mR_Chimaira @ Sep 7th 2009 10:20PM
How about September 25th the day that AT&T's network crashed.
thomas bond @ Sep 10th 2009 7:09PM
You would really only need a data plan and no service charges if Apple would allow Googles
Voice app. Then you could make calls over the net.Since Apple has the final say witch apps
are allowed and is in bed with AT&t it will never happen.
cory @ Sep 23rd 2009 3:59PM
How is the update pushed out?
Itunes update? Iphone update?
RML @ Nov 4th 2009 9:18AM
Updated the iPhone software and now have the MMS feature. It's sad you have to update the software to get this feature on the iPhone when the Blackberrys come with the feature readily available. However, it works (so far) so no complaints.
