China Unicom stockpiling 5M iPhones for launch?
China's official introduction to the iPhone finally seems all but locked for later this year, but to put the size of the market in perspective, check this stat: according to "local media," China's UMTS / HSPA network operator China Unicom is said to have placed an order with the boys and girls in Cupertino for 5 million units at launch in exchange for 10 billion yuan, which is just shy of $1.46 billion. For comparison, AT&T sold about half that number in its last reported quarter, so if the 5 million figure is accurate, Unicom's definitely coming to the field to play ball. Rumors have the first batch of domestic iPhones dropping in September; the carrier's apparently pretty stoked, and understandably so -- there's even talk that they could get within striking distance of China Mobile, the world's largest carrier by subscriber count. Strangely, a Unicom spokesperson is saying that the agreement with Apple to actually sell these isn't finalized, so if they're going to wrap up the paperwork, get the cash from point A to point B, pump out a few million localized handsets, and get 'em on shelves in time for Fall, time is definitely of the essence.

I see the Chinese have good taste in smartphones. I hope five million is just a start. If the iPhone catches on maybe it can grab more of that nearly half-billion person user base of China Unicom. Apple can pick up some fat revenue for another few quarters and maybe pass RIM in smartphone market share or at least get a lot closer.

Except that you're forgetting the bit where Chinese wireless regulations prohibited Apple from including WiFi in the officially-launched version if they also didn't include the Chinese short-range wireless networking technology WAPI. They didn't bend to China so there's no WiFi in this version of the iPhone. Deal-breaker for me as a China Unicom subscriber; I'll go for the Sharp SH0902C (sold as the 923SH in Japan) instead, thank you very much. If I'm going to be limited to the 3G network, mught as well have a phone with a screen that can actually be called "high-res" (480x854).

Can they reach the 1% in the market share?
Praetor @ Aug 14th 2009 3:18PM
Iphone have an opened API, so it's smartphone for the programmers.
teknikkle @ Aug 14th 2009 5:46PM
well the api is open and very flexible.. but your pigeonholed into making what amounts to web portals and games.. like the new commercial that bumps pics to a friend thats cute but bluetooth email and sd swaps work fine.. i dont need an app to make every little task or website more cute.. thats about all you can do

Just one of many major US employers who have incorporated the iPhone as their sole platform of choice into their infrastructure. International research, domestic regional healthcare systems, multinational orgs, etc all ultimately dependent upon the mobile platform your spineless ass loathes for no valid reason. If you ever grow a set in order to face the real world outside your classroom window, bring a first aid kit with you to treat your bruised ego. Suck on it. Bitch.
