Apple blames hot iPhones on the weather, others find oleophobic screen to be fleeting?

Meanwhile, hapless Samsas Traum has found a problem of his own (pictured) that's sure to be blamed on some other act of god in the near future by Apple's spin team: the oleophobic coating is getting rubbed right off his screen. Apparently he has a bit of a fondness for a certain "Flick Fishing" app, which explains the highly localized nature of his oleophobic destruction. We haven't heard many other reports of a similar nature, but we'll keep an eye out for telltale Tap Tap Revenge markings on the iPhones of our rhythm-addled loved ones.
[Thanks, Rafa]

Glad my iphone 3g isn't doing this mess.
celz @ Jul 5th 2009 1:08AM
apple has a point.. if your not smart enough to multitask you probably would leave your iphone in the car in the sun in 110 degree weather.. im guessing this problem is limited to palm springs and vegas cuz the rest of the south west wont be that hot for a while
Periks19 @ Jul 5th 2009 5:48AM
Yeah right what about phoenix, az 110 in the summer reaching all the way to 116 i don't see my pre doing this in that kind of weather, what about lake havasu city, yuma, tucson so many more hot cities
Peter F @ Jul 5th 2009 12:53PM
I can leave any other phone in the car. Why should this phone be any different?

eat a pita. friend of mine left his iphone in a car w/ windows up! summer hot sun = fluctuations in the properties of the material.

I live in a cold area in the US and my iPhone is still getting really hot with I use the 3G. what am I supposed to do now?
Zapote21 @ Jul 5th 2009 10:28AM
Wow... So I leave my G1 in my hot car here in FL and it doesnt do that.. Oh wait... Its not a 3GS... LOLOL
Yet another reason I love my G1...
callisto3 @ Jul 5th 2009 11:24AM
I love how when people aren't having a problem with their phone, it's "LOL another reason I love my blah blah blah". Grow up. Your G1 has problems, too. Enough with the pissing contest that is my phone vs. your phone. It's such a tired and lame debate.
I have the 3GS and it's been disappointing from the start. The uneven screen, the high-pitched whine after text messages, the screen backlight not coming on, the rattling in the case when I set down the phone, etc. Apple really botched this release, in my opinion. I just wish they'd own up to the mistakes and make right by their customers. A $400 phone should be near flawless.
Now go back to enjoying your G1 and enjoy the fact that it's apparently perfect. I bet there's never been any problem with your phone, right? Oh wait... http://forums.t-mobile.com/tmbl/board?board.id=AndroidGeneral

Nothing against you personally, but sorry, Apple deserves all the flak they get. They (and their fanboys) have marketed themselves as some infallible source of genius before which all should bow with reverence.
Yet, as they gain market share, they're having all the same problems the other big boys have had: bugs, security issues, quality control, etc. The real world sucks, don't it?
The bottom line is that Apples makes pretty good products, but so do other companies. Apple's stuff also has shortcomings and problems, just like everyone else.
tedkord @ Jul 5th 2009 4:04PM
Not only does Apple deserve the flak (for never admitting any problems their hardware has), but so do Apple fanboys (not all Apple users, many of whom I know are very reasonable), who make outrageous statements about the heavenly perfection of their Apple equipment.
I remember one fellow on another forum who told me proudly that his Mac would never have a virus, because it was impossible to infect OSx. Fool.

Really? Evidence to support your vapid, hate-based claim?

....Buuuuuuut.....at least your WiFi works right? I mean who cares what happens to it as long as you're carrying around the latest "toy phone" right? I'll bet anyone experiencing this is just too ashamed to realize that they made a poor choice on a poor unit/network decision.
Does anyone using an iPhone actually use it for anything other than what iPod Touch users use it for? Are you really fondling it that much that the screen decides to have cataracts?
Just wanted to throw that out there...
(Commenting using my, GET THIS, WIFI CAPABLE Verizon Omnia, or Saga, or 1-760, or Touch Pro, or Touch Diamond, or Ozone using my, EVEN BETTER MiFi Mobile WiFi router to which I could have commented using any WiFi device available)
Geez....when will Verizon learn to stop caring sooooo much about quality and just provide WiFi already?!?!? I mean they make the phones, right?
By the way...my Omnia is baking in my car right now at about 120.....has done so every day for the last few weeks. No issues at all and no "We are God and what we say goes because we decide what is in" statements from Apple.
Have fun with you iPhoneCataract3G(S) I will be using my perfectly functioning Omnia
Philly Z! @ Jul 5th 2009 1:31PM
@ the last guy
I have an iPhone 3G I was one of the first million iPhones last summer and not 1 problem! The 3GS was quickly thrown together so ppl wouldn't swith from their first gen iPhone to the pre! Personally I hate Sprint and verizon cause they do not have sim cards and every once in a while I like switching from my iPhone to a blackberry Bold
I was a subscriber to the evil empire for years but, they always limit their phones, I'm talking about that annoying Verizon haha, I won't lie I loved having bars everywhere but, the phone choices suck without wi-Fi and it's cause verizon always want u using up Data which their plans always were more then the other guys and then Verizon jacked up SMS cost on me so I had enough! I vowed never to go back to them when I saw the article on how they screwed up getting the first iPhone and having exclustivity!
Philly Z! @ Jul 5th 2009 1:42PM
So Verizon had it's chance to keep me and add the iPhone to their lineup but instead wanted to limit the innovations and sweet bells and whistles Apple gave it, if verizon had their way it would have had 4gigs of storage nothing bigger, no Wi-Fi, no Over-the-air downloads, no APP store it would have the gay ass Get it now store, and their gay Mobile Web 2.0!
That's why verizon sucks idc if most times I have just 2 or 3 bars on my 3G it's on ATT and thus Apple could add all the goodies and even thou ppl complain ATT doesn't allow tethering and MMS we all know verizon wouldn't offer that cause that's to much freedom they love limiting phones!!! And if they did maybe offer it one day it would cost you your first born and ATT will offer the goods once they have a pricing plan, and trust me I might be high but, it's the lesser of 2 evils!
I'm sorry Verizon u lost me as a customer forever when u kept limiting your phones so have fun with your crappy LG chocolates, funky flip phones, and all the crappy $50 phones running your boring OS!!!!
God Bless AT&T and all the freedom they let our iPhones have
el Hefe Weizen @ Jul 5th 2009 2:50PM
@Philly Z steak sandwich
Freedom such as........How's that tethering of your iPhone going? Send any great MMS lately?
Meanwhile My Omnia does both and has a custom ROM on it....It's so locked down that I even have full GPS access.
Wait...can you customize the interface on the iPhone? Yeah? Without jailbreaking or peeing your yellowsn0w or purplera1n on it? I didn't think so.
Your iPhone tells you what to do and that's the end of the story. You have bitten the bullet and said to yourself, and don't lie, "I could probably get by without sending pictures" when MMS has been thrown back and forth between phones since 2003.
So...Steve Jobs Bless AT&T and you're mind control iPhone...thanks for not locking (harharhar) your device.....
By the way Philly Z....God doesn't use an iPhone he gets all his prayer mail real time using a Blackberry....read up on it; it's in the Bible.
tedkord @ Jul 5th 2009 2:52PM
I am typing this on my Verizon Omnia over wifi. Later on tonight I will watch my slingbox over evdo at work. I can tether if I want (I tried just to see if it worked).
Honestly, the only thing the iphone has over my omnia is the display and interface. The interface is taken care of with SPB mobileshell 3, and once the omnia 2 comes, I will have no reason left to envy the iphone onve I have that 800x480 AMOLED. The omnia 1 is nearly the equal of the iphone surpassing it in some ways.
Jack Dodson @ Jul 5th 2009 3:18PM
Literally millions of these phones have been sold to date and one, yes one, is reporting a problem with the Oleophobic coating. From the pictures you have to wonder if the ‘wear’ hasn’t been caused by some solvent residue on the user’s fingers. Think of a painter who wipes his hands with turpentine to clean off the paint, then starts tapping away on his iphone. Look likely? I think so too.
And of course Engadget relies entirely on these edgy, verge-of-hysteria iphone stories to get its name into print. Without the latest iphone problem it has massaged out of all proportion, Engadget would be quoted in the press about as often as a tree.
el Hefe Weizen @ Jul 5th 2009 8:35PM
Come on.....
wait..unless you mean like the artistic painter type and not the one that has to do it for a living. Even if a painter were to have one of these "hot enough to bake a fresh cookie" phones they would surely make sure that any area it comes in contact with has been thoroughly sanitized of any other human remnants before it is placed in a bed of flowers and cotton.
I seriously have never seen someone carrying around an iPhone like it was a normal phone....usually they are being coddled and caressed like they were some kind of Prince baby.
My Omnia...sorry to say...in an ass kicking contest would run all over your iPhone until it was wrapped up and swaddled in the fetal position where it belongs....overheating from embarrassment.
Breon @ Jul 5th 2009 4:39PM
funny, i don't see the palm pre having any problems. iphony 3gS might not be able to hold a candle to the Pre... even if it tried it would just "bake itself to a crisp".
Martin @ Jul 6th 2009 8:45AM
Would have been hilarious if you said the iphone couldn't hold a candle next to the pre... but could probably light one?!
callisto3 @ Jul 5th 2009 8:11PM
And the pissing contest continues.

Once again... for your education:
Verizon Wireless more than likely passed on the first iPhone for mostly customer service reasons, such as:
1. Couldn't get insurance on the phone.
2. Replacements were handled directly through Apple
3. No removable battery
Other factors possibly involved:
1. Apple didn't want to put Verizon Wireless products such as VZW Tones and VZ Navigator on the phones.
2. The price/profit structure between manufacturer and carrier.
I'm sure other things were involved, but at the time of the first iPhone's release, Verizon Wireless had already made the decision to open their GPS, they already offered phones with wi-fi, and most of their PDAs didn't offer any Verizon Wireless software products on them (WinMo phones). So those arguments don't hold water as to why Verizon Wireless passed on the iPhone. The other arguments seem more plausible.
Philly Z! @ Jul 6th 2009 6:35AM
True who wants an iPhone with crappy VZW shit on it, not me!
Your right only there WinMo phones had Wi-Fi, if you look at their line up it's still basicially those, your right don't get me wrong I love my iPhone but was pissed until I got Cut, Copy, Paste!!!!!
Idk why that took so long to add in, MMS isn't a big thong for me, if I want 2 send a picture I'll just post it on Fbook for all my friends
Verizon has recently loosened their Nazi-grip on limiting their phones cause of products other providers now offer and truly it's all thanks to T-Mobile who let ppl really unlock the goodies inside their phone and run it on their network, Plus VZW is like a lead ballon since the iPhone and the Blackberry Storm hasn't done much 2 help them
A question for anyone who knows, what's that company that just started selling a handset that's supposed 2 save their company even thou their taking on water worse then the Titanic, o wait that's Palm haha funny, Pre owners gotta love the what 15 APPs in ur mobile app store
Martin @ Jul 6th 2009 10:34AM
yeah, thats 15 more apps then the iPhone had on their launch!! Seriously, that is the weakest arguement against the Pre that anyone could come up with. How about something more substantial like the build quality or the tiny keyboard (though larger than iphones physical keyboard). Just seriously though, 15 apps is pretty good for a launch, more then most videogame consoles that come out, especially considering all the other programs the phone already has on it already preprogrammed on it!

Here is a little tip that is only two words and worth about five bucks. (800ish if you really want to get specific) that whole screen problem can probably be solved with: *drum roll* screen protector!
JamesDG @ Jul 7th 2009 9:30AM
Everyone here is so biased against Apple, people forget that although they might have a few problems (though I was a 3G and now a 3GS owner and have not noticed anything) they are the most intuitive and easy to use phones on the market. They might not have the most functionality (when compaired to N97 etc) , but everything they do - THEY DO PROPERLY!!!
