I'm also thinking about getting an unlocked android phone to use on at&t. I haven't found out if OTA updates would work since I believe the updates are released by the carriers, but you should be able to update manually somehow as a last resort.
If you're planning on getting an unlocked magic make sure you get the Canadian Rogers version if you want it to be compatible with at&t's 3G network. All of the other versions will only work over the slow edge network. Unfortunately the Hero is also incompatible with at&t 3G at this time, but I'm sure they'll release another version eventually.

Hopefully either AT&T gets it in the states or some version of it is sold that will support the AT&T bands.
