T-Mobile myTouch 3G announced, starts shipping late July
The good news is that T-Mobile USA has finally gotten around to announce its second Android handset, the myTouch 3G; the bad news, though, is that you can't have it just yet. The carrier-customized version of the HTC Magic that has already shipped in parts of Europe, Asia, and Canada features a 3.2-inch 480 x 320 touchscreen, AWS 3G for use on T-Mobile's high-speed network paired with quadband EDGE for global roaming, WiFi, a 3.2 megapixel camera, Exchange support, and -- of course -- Android 1.5 with all the virtual keyboardin' you can handle. Better than the G1? Other than the larger internal memory common to all Magics, that's strictly a matter of personal taste -- but don't worry, you'll have a while to sort it out, because T-Mobile won't even start taking preorders from current customers until July 8 for $199.99 on a two-year contract. Those orders will start shipping in late July, with full national availability following on in early August in your choice of black, white, or "merlot."

I thought the U.S. version had a 5 mp camera? Anyone know for sure?
Rey @ Jun 22nd 2009 12:16AM
thats what i thought, and 2yrs 199? ... it should be lower come on its the same thing as the G1 now with out a 5mp cam and hardware key board .....disappointed !
xingii @ Jun 22nd 2009 2:04AM
The version that was seen with the 5.0 on the back was a photoshopped pic. I don't know how the guys at Eng. didn't catch it. If you rummage through the archives to find that pic, you'll see that both the t-mobile branding and the 5.0 don't quite match the rest of the white background.

this is why tmo will always b the 4th largest carrier cause of stupid shit like this.Tell me u wait a month to ship after ppl bin waiting ending of july will b 5 months since its bin out come on
PJ @ Jun 22nd 2009 2:19AM
no, T-Mo will always be the 4th b/c they are a cheap carrier and cater to cheap customers (glorified national Cricket). But to be fair, the HTC Touch Pro 2 as been out overseas for a while and no US carrier has released it yet either.
bbrim @ Jun 22nd 2009 12:41AM
what about the HTC hero....?
clint @ Jun 26th 2009 6:24AM
I called tmobile yesterday and the rep had never heard of "htc hero". the hero looks awesome!
droid @ Jun 22nd 2009 12:02PM
Really not surprised to see 3.2 all Magic's/Ions are 3.2. The bigger question is, if T-Mobile is going to announce it why aren't they ready to take "preorders?" It's not like they're required to ship them it's all on paper. Forcing people to wait to July 8 is, well, kinda stupid.
PJ @ Jun 22nd 2009 2:16AM
they did the same with the G1, announced in Sept, started taking preorders in early Oct and went on sale Oct 22nd. it seems to be their thing
Beanszz @ Jun 22nd 2009 1:09AM
Tmobile is a big disappointment to me right now to find out there shipping out late july ?????? !
Youngcalihottie @ Jun 22nd 2009 12:08PM
I thought that tmobiles was google branded? Isn't it the case that branded handsets do not have exchange support?
Brandon Bumeter @ Jun 23rd 2009 12:55AM
I'm a TMO sales rep in the STL, our manager's all got the phone this morning....and definitely no Exchange support other than 3rd party apps (which were already available for the G1). So I'm not quite sure what that was all about....the software is quite literally identical to the G1. The only major update I could find (other than the obvious cosmetics) is the phones internal storage; the G1 shipped with a 1GB card for media and roughly 75MB of system storage for apps, etc. The myTouch ships with a 4GB card and roughly 290MB of internal. Good for more app storage I presume? I'll hold out for the Samsung.

T-Mobile is the nation's 4th largest carrier because they didn't participate in any mega mergers that Verizon, AT&T and Sprint participated in. They had a few small ones like SunCom but come on let's be real not stupid.
I for one am very excited to get this device. I've been using an unlocked iPhone on T-Mobile for a while now.
I like T-Mobile's network where I live and the call quality is excellent. I've been testing their 3G network out here in LA and I like what I see. They don't have 80 million users clogging up the network so at least in my area it's all mine for the taking. ;-) No complaints here!
I didn't think the Merlot one would look good but after seeing these pics I'm starting to see it in a whole other light. Looks good. Hard to decide?
I would have preferred a 3.5 mm jack, but when I stop and think about how many times I'd need it it's really a moot point. I use my Nano for music and a BT headset for calls while driving.

IT COMES IN RED!?!?!?!?!?
Vincent @ Jun 22nd 2009 10:29AM
To HTC bosses:
put android in one hand, put tegra in the other hand.
Now join your hands together.
Was that so hard ?
ps: with a 4+ in. screen please !
ps2: before christmas 2009 thanks

what the hell is with this commenting system...

So if it has Exchange support, that means it's not a "Google Experience". Anybody know what else that entails? Seems like just a branding thing.
Nathan @ Jun 23rd 2009 5:41AM
Right, this isn't a 'google' branded device. It still will have the same connectivity experience a usual Google user is used to and the Gmail is otherwordly but having that exchange support will be so nice. If only they came out with this before I switched to BlackBerry. G1 didnt cut it for me. I cannot wait for the Touch Pro 2...
Heavytoka @ Jun 22nd 2009 12:41PM
Looks nice, but does anyone even have T-Mobile?
Galen20K @ Jun 22nd 2009 1:36PM
Are you Ignorant or Just Learning Impaired? Just wondering because you sound ridiculous.
G1Fan @ Jun 22nd 2009 2:54PM
I have a feeling everyone who is waiting for this mobile will try it at the store, then purchase a G1 instead.
The novelty of the on-screen keyboard gets old after 15 seconds.
On a G1, after you've pecked a couple of emails, text & surfed with the on-screen keyboard,
you end up using the real keyboard instead...
Efficiency and speed wins again...
frank @ Jun 23rd 2009 12:36AM
I couldn't possibly agree more about virtual keyboards. When the iPhone first launched, I published an article about the fad, predicting that it would take about a year before everyone realized what a bad idea it was. I knew that the fanboy contingent would type with a prosthetic nose if Apple told them it was cool and some small portion of people who didn't much texting might find it only slightly inconvenient.
Apparently I was wrong. My attempts to argue that it's slower have been futile but I still don't know a single person who can text blind. I can type entire messages, with proper punctuation, using T9 on a familar handset. With QWERTY, I've gotten to the point where I only need to glance down occasionally. Certain words just seem to flow like guitar licks requiring no visual affirmation at all.
Yet virtual keyboards are still wildly popular. I guess I'll never get it.
GORT22 @ Jun 22nd 2009 5:20PM
I agree. I text and email a lot for my business. Using a virtual keyboard is good for quick stuff, like searches. An actual keyboard is a must. If only the MyTouch had a slide out keyboard. It would be awesome.
shotdisc98 @ Jun 22nd 2009 8:58PM
So can we get the myTouch/3G S/Pre comparos going, NOW?! My contract is expiring and it's time for a new phone.

Any Tmo reps know if the G1 is going to come down in price again when the G2 is released?
Alex @ Jun 23rd 2009 9:42AM
I have tmobile and have been rather happy with them. I've been thinking about upgrading to an android phone (G1/Mytouch), but I would like to seriously handle one prior to purchasing. I dont get why NONE of the Tmobile stores around me have any real demos available or on display. When I ask, it's always the phone of one of the sales people/managers. They dont really let me play with it much, at least I am not comfortable messing around with their personal phone.
also anyone in the medical field who uses epocrates and wants to see it on an android phone, please sign this petition:

It's a good phone after all, might have a chance with the palm pre and iPhone 3G S
