Kinda self-evident, no self-built Linux distribution has really been successful. Not only is the OS not built for a gui (the horrible state of icons and meta-data support), but nobody really has the resources nor technical skill to build a one-off on a deadline, except for maybe Google.
It almost killed Palm to try and it took the years.. who does Garmin/Asus think they are?
