Verizon may be planing to implement an LTE network but we have no idea where, when, or any details. Sprint will have WiMax coverage rolled out to approximately 50 Million people with the announced cities they are implementing the service in through the end of 2010.
HTC, Samsung, Nokia, all have equipment that is released and being used NOW.
Yes, LTE will be world standard someday (maybe by like 2015 by the time all the networks are built out) but WiMax will also be a world standard and is already being built out at a faster rate, I don't know why people have such a hard time understanding this. I mean if 130 out of approximately 200 countries have or plan to have WiMax networks within the next couple of years, How can we not say this won't be a world standard.
People just love to bash Sprint for any reason, yeah Sprint has many problems, but lets not pretend they are the only ones in the world involved in creating a WiMax 4G network and crucify them for this decision.
The problem with Sprint and their so-called 4G is quite simple to define. Where the hell is it? Oh wait, Baltimore. What a great roll out, not. Fios is being rolled out faster than sprint / clearwire whoever's 4G network.
So this rhetoric that they are rolling out to 130 cities has zero credibility. We'll have 5G networks and sprint will still be 'rolling out their 4G network'.
You have to start somewhere. BAWA was the jumping off point for PCS too and lo, it managed to become the first all digital nationwide network. Now it's the fastest, most dependable 3G network. Yes, even above VZ.(http://gizmodo.com/5111989/the-definitive-coast+to+coast-3g-data-test).
I could list the remainder of the cities coming online, but you'll just complain that it's not here now because you have no understanding of the undertaking and capital involved in moving to a whole new architecture. ATT and T-Mobile are STILL rolling out their 3G networks and you're complaining about a company working on 4G - http://blip.tv/file/1778457

Sprint is rolling out their 4G network through 2010 and is actually LIVE NOW in Bmore/Portland.
Verizon/Att are talking about how they will roll LTE sometime soon but no real definitive plans have been released and is no further than beta testing if anything.
TMobile is just rolling out their 3G network now.
So since there are no other wireless companies that have a 4G network in the US we have people like Dan who will just compare a LAND service like Verizon's Fios for the sake of ease.
But wait, Fios only reaches 12.5 Million people as of this year and is only going to reach 23 million by 2010 (http://247wallst.com/2007/02/23/verizon_shares_/), compared to Sprint who is providing a MOBILE Solution that yes is only released in Bmore/Portland but with the other announced cities, Sprint will have a combined reach of over 50 million people on their 4G network by 2010. Hmm lets see, Fios began the buildout around 2007 and by 2010 Fios will be at 23 million compared to Sprint who just began their buildout last year and will reach 50 million people by 2010? Looks like Sprint 4G network will actually out pace Verizon's land based Fios.

Actually it's a great point. Sprint has been promising a 4G network for years now. Yet we're still waiting. Then they throw out more promises and you expect us to believe them. You do realize that LTE is going to absolutely destroy WIMAX. The technology is so new it is still being developed. Once Verizon and AT&T start those roll outs, it's game over for wimax and their 2mb, sorry 6mb, data service. As it stands HSDPA easily surpasses any live wimax service. I have easily clocked 14mb using it overseas.
But anyway, Wimax is a moronic choice of technology to deploy in here, considering the large area it needs to cover. One would have thought that Sprint learned a thing or two from their mistake of choosing 1900mhz to operate on.
Why would I be bashing sprint? Sprint is company offering a service and is rightfully judged on it as well as their customer service. Clearly they fail in both. Though it is funny to look at any sprint forum only to see their users fighting over sero plans and other cheap discounts. The other carriers obviously don't want those types of customers.
The point about FIOS is that a fiber optic cable that is physically being installed into the ground, is being rolled out faster than a wireless network. That is a disgrace. Though I don't blame them entirely. Considering that cable companies now own part of that wimax network, Verizon and AT&T have nothing to worry about. They'll stuff it up like they stuff everything they touch up. And then try to overcharge people for it. Cementing their future in chapter 11.

100 markets vs maybe 30 with products from the likes of Cisco/Linksys (http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2009/05/14/cisco-signs-on-to-provide-infrastructure-build-linksys-wimax-ro/) on worldwide standard (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WiMAX). Backers like Google and Intel.
Other than a reseller, Sprint's not involved in the roll out.

Dell just released 3 new laptops with built in WiMax (http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/06/dell-injects-wimax-into-trio-of-laptops/), Acer, Toshiba, Lenovo also have or are building WiMax equipped laptops.
