Nokia and Intel collaborating on new Linux-based phone OS called oFono
Between Android and the myriad of LiMo builds out there, we're not sure the world needs another open-source phone operating system, but Nokia and Intel seem to think differently: the two behemoths have joined up to develop oFono, a Linux-based mobile OS for GSM handsets. We don't know many details, but he project seems to be pulling people from both Intel's Moblin initiative and Nokia's Maemo project, and job postings from a "major handset company" searching for a GUI designer in either Dallas or San Jose have appeared, so it sounds like something big is in the works. We'll see.

It's not a new OS... It's an application / API for writing extensions to the application...
It will be compatible with "multiple linux distributions"
This needs to be changed

finally they'll use their linux investment... I wonder why it took so long, and why it seen they can't decide between symbian and linux (which both are great, especially symbian basis)...

They are getting desperate.
Why can't Nokia simply use Android on their devices and get on with it? What's their point in absolutely having to own the software?
Android is open-source and free, so Nokia should just improve on it and customize it. It's not GPL3 Gnu, so they can take it, customize it, improve it and not share their improvements with competitors.

i don't really think they are desperate un any ways :-D the 5800 is selling as much as the iphone since it's out and it's only their first trial, they'll soon have half a dozen touchscreen devices... They don't want android because they wants to promote their own online apps and not competition. OVI promises are great ! I can't wait next month to get an n97 and the launch of their online services !!
From my point of view (and i know really well winmo, symbian, the iphone and android - i only lack blackberry knowledge) this brand has a real value making full featured quality - a word samsung, lg and htc should learn - phones. They may not be the sexiest ones out there, but they are definitly the best compromise between features, reliability, efficiency and quality. Their two main problems are their marketing department, if it even exists, and their interfaces design center even if thing are being solved there.
