Palm Pre definitely coming to Canada on Bell Mobility: 2H 2009
What the CEO wants, the CEO gets -- right? Evidently so, as just four months after Ed Colligan proudly stated that he wanted the Pre in Canadian hands, Palm has revealed that the to-be launched handset will indeed grace the cellular airwaves in the Great North. Canucks will have to rely on Bell Mobility (a CDMA carrier, for those unaware) for service, and they'll have to wait until "the second half of 2009" to indulge. I must say on one hand it is exciting to know that the Pre will be coming to Canada, but on the other hand, it is only coming to Bell Canada and not Telus...both premier CDMA Carriers. Why firms like Palm and RIM purposely limit their new phones to single Carriers is beyond me. Many here in Canada are anxiously awaiting the arrival of the Pre, but for some that are tied to Telus contracts, that time will never come.
Even for those who will switch to Bell to obtain a Pre, the 6 month wait starts all over again, and I don't think I can go through all that again. I for one will most likely end up going to Rogers and picking up the new Apple iPhone when it gets released next month.

Is the pre released yet? No? Boring.

So what if I dont have a 3G data connection and intend to use this a regular phone with offline apps, how does the whole cloud computing/web OS architecture pan out?
Does it mean this needs to be an always connected device?

I completely aggree. I was pretty pumped about the release of this phone but it seems to me they really didn't think this one over at Palm. I will also most likely purchase the iphone by summer on rogers. I'm pretty dissapointed about the tie with Bell.
Does Bell even exist in Manitoba?

Me too. I'm a Flames fan, myself :-)
But as for the phone... I'm a Bell Mobility customer myself right now, with an HTC Touch. I'll be about 18 months into my contract by the time this appears... Hmmmm!

I do NOT feel offended by your use of Canuck in your article. It's used everyday in all forms of media.

@Thunder... the only thing is, you probably won't be able to keep that juicy $10/m unlimited data plan.

very discouraging that the palm pre will not be available for GSM phones in Canada anytime soon. do not understand why Palm does not take advantage of the number of people with other carriers that would like to have the pre palm. just like others have said i will likely just have to to with the iphone even though i would purchase a palm pre if available in for a canadan GSM phone.
