The build quality on this is great, nice and solid, no squeaks and has a nice weight to it. Symbian is workable, however, the os needs an overhaul. FYI folks are also reporting receptions issues with the unit (when holding the phone, hand covers antenna area).

steve

Comments on Rogers begins selling white Nokia E71, Americans consider relocating

FYI Steve, the OS does not need an overhaul. It's missing a few key features, but on the whole, this is my favorite OS out there. I don't see what the problem is, and why everybody beats up on it. Ok, its aged a little. Big deal. Its steal easy as all hell to use, and you can do almost anything you want with it. What would be nice is if all of us who have FP1 could get an update to FP2 with all the prior Eseries functionality and more. And since I just bought an unlocked E71, I can finally comment on the reception issue. It's not an issue unless you're in an area where coverage is a problem. When I'm getting pounded with 3G coverage, I can cover the antenna all I want and I will not drop any bars, but unlike my N95, it struggles when there isn't a great signal in the area (minimal 3G and bad GSM coverage), and covering the antenna can kick you down 2-3 bars some times. Great phone though. I'm extremely happy with it. Buy it unlocked.

Douglas

Comments on Rogers begins selling white Nokia E71, Americans consider relocating

I have own this phone for over 6 months now and I got to say it is the best phone I have own to date. It really is a great compromise b/w business and pleasure.

However, I wonder about some of the fawning over the white version I see online, and I can only imagine it's coming from people who have only seen Nokia's publicity photos of the white model -- which doesn't seem likely on some of the tech blogs that are white E71 crazy. I came pretty close to buying the white version myself, having only seen deliciously photoshopped images such as the one on this post. Hell, I'd almost call it an "artist's rendering" rather than a picture. I noticed a few people on Amazon comment that the phone they got did not look like the picture, so I checked Flickr for some unboxing action.

Seriously, the "white" model ain't that pretty. It might look as good as it does here if you never leave your brightly-lit all-white spaceship so that all of the metal surfaces are shining similar whiteness to the keyboard. Otherwise, in normal on-earth settings, the metal casing is a lot darker than you think, and the keyboard just sticks out like buck teeth. The contrast is really weird. Maybe some people still love that, but do yourself a favor and check out Flickr for white E71s before you buy, thinking you'll get some all-white angelic glowing thing.

shelbinator
