HTC Touch HD handled, pre-release style
Okay, so this "review" of HTC's beastly new Touch HD isn't much of a review, but it offers up a few important snippets of insight -- and perhaps more importantly for the visual stimulation-starved among us, a plethora of photography. The reviewer notes that the 800 x 480 display is positively gorgeous, the cam is decent (though autofocus is a tad on the slow side), the latest iteration of TouchFLO 3D running here chugs along with virtually no slowdown, and despite the display and the heavy-duty spec sheet, the darned thing is essentially the same size as an iPhone 3G. Oh, and there's also a true 3.5mm headphone jack lurking on here, too, which we dare you to find on that HTC in your pocket right now. Makes it all that much harder to hear that it's launching in the fourth quarter without global HSDPA, doesn't it?

65k color is the only thing holding me back =[
saqer @ Sep 17th 2008 10:27PM
How many colors can the human eye even discern?
Jarrod Frates @ Sep 18th 2008 8:36PM
The human eye can discern about seven million colors, give or take. A mere 65,000 does have artifacts that are easily visible where the original graphic was rendered at a much higher color depth.

Gimme gimme gimme!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have no problem with the "no global HSDPA" as I run on 2100mhz, another win for me. Yah.
gquaglia @ Sep 17th 2008 8:21PM
Does HTC hate the US. First the Diamond without 3G for American GSM, now this. Do they know how well it would sell if it had global HSDPA. Maybe they are just retarded.
SkyKing @ Sep 17th 2008 9:42PM
What are you talking about?? Bestbuy selling/pre-ordering Diamond 3G.....
Richard @ Sep 17th 2008 8:26PM
I cannot imagine that they won't make this in a "US" version to support ATT's bands.
How much longer is ATT's exclusive on the Jesus (sorry) iPhone?
Does their carrying the Touch HD cross any agreement with the control freaks in Cupertino?
gquaglia @ Sep 17th 2008 8:55PM
I think the iphone is exclusive until 2010.

Pretty... I still want a keyboard though.
SoCoolCurt (PSN: KillaKornbread) @ Sep 18th 2008 12:17AM
i agree. this thing is damn near perfect (since i prefer WinMo) but i need a physical keyboard.
gquaglia @ Sep 17th 2008 9:55PM
@SkyKing, the Diamond you are thinking about is for Sprint which is CDMA and yes is 3G. The GSM model, just like the Touch HD, does not have the 3G frequencies in it for US 3G use.
Josh Yeung @ Sep 17th 2008 10:50PM
uh...what are you talking about...the US HSPDA 3G have been out for almost 2 weeks now... have you been follwing the new lately, you can even check the price out on sites like cti-miami...
SkyKing @ Sep 18th 2008 10:43AM
go to bestbuy.com....
band: Quad-band GSM, not CDMA...pretty sure it's 3G since it say 3G on the title..lol....

What is HTC doing.. they need they should have released this instead of the touch diamond or touch pro... They should force the carriers to get it on their networks now.
Next they should have put android on it, as their android launch phone as well. I could deal with win mobile though if it brings the goods.. which means it needs to meet the 3g and wifi built in requirement. Too bad apple is still killing them and this won't help unless it gets a big push and win mobile doesn't crash on it every other day.
muzhik @ Sep 17th 2008 11:10PM
maybe they dont want to go "big"....
MikeWard1701 @ Nov 6th 2008 12:03PM
"Next they should have put android on it"
Yeah right. Android isn't ready/proven itself yet to be put on devices like this.
You wouldn't take a 17 year old for their first driving lesson in a Bentley.

This handset looks pretty sweet, actually I think it's got something on the iPhone on the purely cosmetic side of things.
The one thing that WM will probably never equal or surpass the iPhone on is the UI. TouchFLO this or Touch3D or TouchWhatever. I've seen it and it's cool, but it just doesn't have the "Wow" factor of the iPhone.
Plus all the crappy apps one ends up loading on the device are usually developed plain vanilla, and there's no FLO between the cool general UI and your app. It's almost like two different interfaces. Not to mention that a lot of applications are not "resolution aware" and either just don't work, display wrong, or display but cut off certain parts of the app which you can never access.
ZEO2K @ Sep 18th 2008 12:37AM
What the hell!
Damn that joint is so sexy...HTC NEEEEEEEDS to make a CDMA Sprint version, so I can slap on that Sprint TV and Sprint Navigation on it. Gat Damn!
Jaycalgary @ Sep 18th 2008 2:10AM
Why do people always have to bash WinMo considering no other OS has even close to as many really decent apps? If you had a 200mhz device with WinMo I'm sure it would suck but something like this I wouldn't want any other OS because of the apps.
chris @ Sep 18th 2008 3:07AM
surely what everyone wants to know is: can it ship with android?
Eddie @ Sep 18th 2008 8:27AM
Yeah, but does it play Crysis?
Can0Spam @ Sep 18th 2008 9:40AM

I have a question I hope some WinMo users will be able to answer : can you play music while surfing? This would be niiiiiiceee :-)
wuzy @ Sep 18th 2008 6:52PM
What sort of garbage has the Jesus (sorry again) iPhone ads. been feeding you guys?
With WinMo (and I'm pretty sure with Symbian too), as long as you've got enough RAM to spare you can multitask as many apps. as you want. Usually around 3 before being bogged down.
The combination is endless
michael @ Sep 27th 2008 11:52PM
You can surf and play music at the same time with the new T-Mobile G1
animedbz16 @ Sep 18th 2008 4:29PM
Why isnt it 1080p and have an HDMI output so I can hook this badboy up to my TV
michael @ Sep 27th 2008 11:51PM
And by the way, Rumor has it that the HTC HD might be going to T-Mobile (Possibly the G2)
NuShrike @ Oct 10th 2008 8:32PM
Do you really want to get a phone that entirely skimped on the hardware FPU in order get a GPU in there? Do you really want a phone from the people that continue to scrape the bottom of the GLBenchmarks barrel because of the missing GPU?
Then go get the Touch HD.
NuShrike @ Oct 10th 2008 8:35PM
.. bottom because of the missing FPU ... Do you really want a phone that will never have the fast UI because you got the MS and HTC cooks whom neither will take responsibility to max out the capability of the hardware?
freshnycboy @ Nov 4th 2008 8:53PM
As long as HTC keeps putting WinMobile on their phones, they won't get a DIME from me. WinMobile is a piece of JUNK>>>>
