all over it. For better or worse (though probably better), Moto has released its next-generation push-to-talk over cellular (PoC) solution, which is optimized for CDMA 1x networks with EV-DO Rev. A data capability. According to the official verbiage, the new solution leverages the zippy protocol to provide "low call set-up time latency and improved quality of service (QoS)." Rev. A chirping -- who woulda thunk it?

So now motorola gets on the bandwagon with the Nextel direct connect. Qualcomm's all over it and yet here comes motorola trouncing in like its a new thing....lol

What are you talking about? Motorola was only ever the one to do Nextel's Direct Connect.
This is Motorola jumping on the bandwagon that is using the latest and fastest CDMA EV-DO Rev. A protocol instead of over the older and slower iDEN over TDMA.

This is Motorola jumping on the bandwagon that uses the newer and faster CDMA EV-DO Rev. A standard over the older and slower TDMA-based iDEN.

ummmm.... Motorola already released a PTT handset that uses Rev.A last month on Verizon. v750 Adventure. What am I missing here.

They have also released handsets for sprint using evdo rev a as well. I am not sure what exactly moto is trying to announce here. unless they are saying that they are going to start releasing alot of new devices.

real ptt is either iden or rev. a. Got it, Moto makes phones on both. Moto owns the Iden tech which is why only they can make phones on it unless they allow someone like bb. Qchat is a rev a. ptt tech that Qualcomm developed and Sprint is definitely using it. Some how Verizon has rev. a ptt as well. Sprint has exclusivity for Q chat so at first it was thought Qualcomm made VZW their own rev. a ptt. But now that Moto is releasing this maybe VZW is using this tech. Especially because Im pretty sure VZW and Sprint are the only networks in the world with Rev. A and PTT

I think you're pretty much agreeing with my post above, but I wanted to add that:
1) GSM has a halfway decent PTT solution. Not sure on performance stats, but better than the old PTT over CDMA (Readlylink on Sprint, something else on VZW
2) VZW is definitely using Moto's PTT solution...not maybe.

Why is this news?
Both LG and Sanyo have had Rev. A PTT devices on Sprint since July.
MOTO is releasing the Renegade on Sprint next month as well.
So what exactly makes this breaking news?

Here's the deal: Motorola is announcing that they made a protocol that is used for PTT over rev A. This is what Verizon is using for their new PTT service...whether or not Moto made the phones is totally another topic.
BTW, whoever said iDEN was slower for PTT? Data yes, PTT no. Qchat (developed by Qualcomm for Sprint) is slower than iDEN PTT, and Moto's PTT is slower still, since it's running in the software layer rather than being an actual modification to rev A protocols (Qchat). All in all, we're still talking about connecting in about a second on Qchat and iDEN PTT, so they're both pretty similar performance wise. Not sure on moto's solution, but I'd bet it's very close too.
As for sound quality...Qchat and iDEN are pretty even IMO, so not sure if that's what the comment in the story was about. If it was about Verizon and Sprint (CDMA)'s old PTT services, then yeah, they sucked.
