Well, finally. iPhone firmware 2.0.1 has just been released by Apple, and we're hoping it solves the
myriad problems introduced by 2.0: crashing apps, interminable keyboard delays, choppy scrolling -- you know what we're
talking about. We're pulling down the 250MB file now, we'll let you know how things turn out -- won't you do the same?
Update: Well, it took its sweet time to install, but things seem a little tighter and snappier all around. We'll give it a day or so of actual usage before we pronounce things A-OK, though -- how's it going for you?
[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Reluctantly, I have to wait until the Dev Team gives the A-OK so I can do this on my first gen iPhone on T-Mobile.

Apple rocks :)

Erik, where is the cut and paste you promised us last week?
It doesn't exist until we see it. Thus, it still doesn't exist.
Jack @ Aug 11th 2008 1:43AM
Safari's definitely faster. 2.0.1 does solve keyboard issues and Google maps seemed to locate position quickly as well.
Anon @ Aug 4th 2008 8:54PM
I've upgraded a jailbroken 3g to 2.0.1. It's locked now.
Doing a restore and hoping for the best, I'll post with an update when it's done.

My two cents... I read engadget multiple times per day as well as BGR and I see all the Iphone fan boys defend their product as if someone was speaking of their mother and the same goes for Blackberry fans, At&T Fans and Verizon fans. I personally have used Verizon for the past few years and have been totally satisfied with coverage and all aspects of their company except for product offerings until recently. I think VZW has heard the readers and bloggers loud and clear and have brought some great new products since the beginning of the year. I am an informed customer an know there is virtually NO difference in pricing between Big Red and Big Blue and I don't mind paying if it satisfies my needs. With all that being said I have a BB curve with verizon and I LOVE this device, RARELY drop a call and the EVDO penetration is by far a strong point. With this being said I AM NOT a fan boy of ANYONE except myself and what works. With all the hype of the Iphone I decided to purchase my first Iphone (16GB 3G) with no intentions of cancelling my BB with Verizon but thought the iphone would be a nice addtition. I have had my iphone with ATT service for over a week now and I will say the iphone is one slick device!! However, I agreed totally it needed an update on the firmware, it's flakey at times and was not the PERFECT device the die-hard fan boys made it out to be. Again, I love the phone and look forward to loading the update and enjoying the benefits. I can hands down say for texting and emailing the blackberry is by far a superior device. I have friends with iphones who text constantly and I can blow them away in speed of typing with a real keyboard as opposed to the touchscreen. Sure there are fanboys that can't type fast on the iphone, but the average consumer will have an easier time with texting with the bb or any real keyboard. What many people in here don't realize is they are not the common user, myself and friends are the mainstream. However, as for sure joy of playing with a device, the iphone is VERY enjoyable. The lack of MMS and CUT AND PASTE simply baffles me on the iphone. To myself and my mainstream friends MMS is critical on a phone and anyone that says Apple didn't drop the ball on this, your are simply not being truthful. This is a mainstream feature and I have found myself pulling out my BB to take pics instead of the iphone because you can send the damn pic with the iphone. Just STUPID!.... Hardware conclusion, all phones have strong points and bad points, but I could never use the iphone full time, but I do love to play with the kewl applications..... THE BIGGEST difference is what I consider to be the most important aspect of owning a mobile phone period, can I make a phone call and keep the call!!!! As with any mobile company there will particular places where one works better than the other, however with this post I am speaking of overall user use in several different areas not "my house or community" as I hear so often in here. In Metro Atlanta, Metro Ft. Lauderdale/Miami and western half of NC there is NO DOUBT Verizon's service is FAR superior! I have dropped more calls in the last week with the iphone than I have in ALL the years I have been with Verizon. Again, I have NO alliance to either company and still love my iphone and will keep it and enjoy the phone. But if I have to make an important phone call there is no doubt which phone I grab, my BB on Verizon. Sorry guys I am NOT here to bash At&t in the least, I just wanted to give you a real consumer opinion. As for the 3G coverage, again it's not even close! If you are outdoors it seems to do ok, but more times than not if you step inside you will lose the 3G, while looking at my BB on Verizon it's on 3G 99% of the time indoors or out. Even while on the golf course this weekend the course is located WELL within the ATLANTA 3G footprint, if I was in very wooded area I would lose my 3G, once in the open fairway, BOOM full 3G on the iphone. With my Verizon had 3G 100% of the time. I am simply posting this to all the haters from both sides that each has strong points, however on the actual coverage there is just simply no question which service is more reliable to talk on. People can say what they wish and I have to say I was hesitant to believe all the tests from Consumer Reports and other publications insisting Verizon's service is consistantly better, they are correct, Verizon is truly the best talkable service out there. The bashers can start bashing this post as I am certain they will, but if you will give it a fair test as I did, you will come away with fewer dropped calls on the Verizon phone than Big Blue. I will keep my iphone and keep enjoying all it has to offer, but for a true business call I will use my verizon service. Consumer Reports ranks them #1 for several years now and sorry to say folks the proof is there.... Keep and open mind and THINK before you post some of these crazy one sided posts.... Thanks for reading!

good read. thanks for posting this! I am currently in the same predicament of decideing whether or not to purchase and keep vz.
My current plan was to infact keep VZ, replace my LG Voyager w/ a cheap lg vx5200, and buy an iPhone 3g, which would give me 2 phones til my contract w/ vz expires.
It's good to know that I m not the only 1 who would go to the extent of having 2 phone lines haha..
I'm in CA so hopefully ATT service will hold up against VZ for me so I can drop one (thought i highly doubt that will happen).
Randy @ Aug 4th 2008 9:23PM
And WTF does this tirade have to do with the topic at hand?
Darren @ Aug 4th 2008 9:58PM
I think he's saying that he sucks at golf. Playing from heavily wooded areas, and only once in the fairway?!?
Evilhomer @ Aug 4th 2008 10:08PM
@Shane Atlanta: Who give a crap. Go post in a Verizon fanboy site. Take your iPhone back. You don't need to use this forum to write your GD autobiography. For those of us who care about the iPhone, which the post was directed at, may want to discuss the upgrade and not wade through your blabbering.
Fact is, no one here gives a crap what your personal experiance was. That's not the topic of the damn post.
Evilhomer @ Aug 4th 2008 10:12PM
Oh, and I just installed the update and I can already see a major improvement in the performance.
Gregg W. Smith @ Aug 4th 2008 10:23PM
Mine is so much better it just made me dinner and walked the dog!
David @ Aug 4th 2008 10:43PM
Just a couple FYIs for others who haven't done it yet:
• You do the update in iTunes when you connect your iPhone (the OP should mention this). Nothing showed up in Software Update nor did I find the update on the Apple web site. It's roughly 250 mb, so it ain't small.
• Update went smoothly using iTunes 7.7.1 on a PB G4.
• iTunes restarts the iPhone, installs the update, then restarts the iPhone again.
• iTunes wants the phone to stay connected after the restart, then syncs the phone.
The update went smoothly, though YMMV. Just now starting to use it post-update, so no experiences yet.
David @ Aug 4th 2008 10:47PM
Okay, so I missed the fact the title says it right there..."now available through iTunes." I sorta skipped over that when I read it too fast.
james p duff @ Aug 4th 2008 11:57PM
my main problem was the contacts button was choppy at best to load and it works flawlessly after the update... looks good for now!!!
UGH. @ Aug 5th 2008 12:56AM
off topic (kind of) --
I was installing my update to my iphone (with a cracked screen i no longer use as a phone, just for wi-fi & apps).. i havent needed a sim for a month now since i use a different phone and carrier
my phone restarted and now it says i need to put in an active sim.. my att sim is inactive now since i ported my number over to t-mobile..
is there anyway i can bypass this.. or anyone know how to get it hacked.. or am i just screwed?
SuperSexyErik (^_^) @ Aug 5th 2008 3:22AM

shaneatlanta @ Aug 5th 2008 1:19AM
LMAO.... Just as thought "go back to VZW Fan boy site" .... I had held some of that in for so long... I will keep my iphone thank you as I said I like my Iphone but as you usual you can't see the forest for the trees! Just keep sitting over in the corner of Starbucks for hours with your friends and call that an outing..... I give up...lol... Thanks for making my day with the responses, it was exactly as i expected...

Grrr..... no fix on Outlook crashing.
OutlookSyncClient has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
bmstuckey @ Aug 5th 2008 4:50AM
so "shaneatlanta" or what ever the hell, that statement about verizon being the most reliable isn't true country wide. I've said this many times and will apparently be saying it again. There are parts of the country where yes verizon will have a signal but, it sucks horrible! For instance; the state of Tennessee, and the Carolinas, also Kentucky! I travel a lot and I've used every service in the book from alltel to VZW. Not one has compared to the AT&T phones I've had i have consistanly been asked by friends to use my phone to make calls cause there verizon will connect and them drop them like a smoking habit. I've watched it with my own eyes. I use to have signal on my Att back when verizon customers had to roam over to sprint towers (some of you may not even know that use to happen.) Here in Nashville, Att is boss! Which is why you will see iPhones in hands all over this city I see it equal to any blackberry in this city believe it or not! Please come look for yourself! I will agree though we here are not normal phone users, we are major users and we want the best experience out of our phones, which is why you will often find more haters than lovers of the iPhone in the blog world. Don't get me wrong I love mine and would never trade it, but in many respects the people who hate this phone I totally understand. It's just not for them, and I can respect that. I don't repect people who don't see how how even in it's downfalls it still leaps and bounds above other phones and set a new trend in the cell phone market that's here to stay! That was my own personal bit.
Anyhow, I'm super excited about getting this update to fix some of these bugs I'm seeing all in all though, I love the iPhone experience so far!
P.S. This update is not where you will find copy/paste wait til around September for that update also know to real bloggers as (we hope) 2.1.0

Stay away from the M&Ms and coffee.... before bedtime
Wayner83 @ Aug 5th 2008 1:33PM
ShaneAtlanta,
I have a work phone with Verizon and my personal IPhone with AT&T. I travel all around the south, as well as every town in Metro Atlanta. I have to say that your opinion on Verizon over AT&T in this area is exactly that, an Opinion. I have multiple times had signal with my iphone when my VZ phone did not. I hope people do not take too much merit in your Opinion or take it as fact, as I have had the opposite experience as you have. I tell people everyday that i would have payed over a thousand for my iphone for the simple fact it has simplified my life. Video and MMS are not requirements for my day to day use. The new Apps, the high quality (not MP, QUALITY), the complete integration, the maps and GPS, it is all seamless and has made my life and job much more efficient.
Michael @ Aug 5th 2008 6:38PM
My keyboard, still lags. And I still have to reboot my phone multiple times per day to do this.
rabib @ Aug 7th 2008 12:27AM
guys you can turn 3g off now..go to settings>network.
Rick @ Aug 7th 2008 6:52PM
You could turn off 3G before...I haven't been home to update my iPhone since the update came out and it's got that option already lol.

Man Apple likes to duck and cover when it comes to this phone, they can't get it right. Check this link:
