Sure the mass market wants small, sleek phones, but there are a LOT of older people out there who want a larger ("more solid") phone with big buttons...

I think you guys know that this is a CAR PHONE. As in a hard wired to a car with a little antennae sticking out of your rear window? Remember how things used to be before 1995?
I can see plenty of reasons for a phone number to be tied to a car, and not a person.

Apparently, they also still make these kind of phones for people who live in areas with little or no service. Because they have a more powerful antenna they can get better signal from the tower.

This is also a much cheaper alternative for people who have fleets of service than those dedicated satellite like the ones from QUALCOMM. My company is looking at this from where we can have an in car unit with gps tracking and push to talk and even a fax interface. I hope Nextel carries it.
